Position: Street Maintenance Worker I

Position Overview

The Street Maintenance Worker plays a vital role in performing routine and emergency maintenance, repair, and upkeep of streets, parking lots, curbs, sidewalks, and trail systems. This position emphasizes strong teamwork, a positive and service-oriented attitude, and a high level of pride in delivering quality work. Employees in this role collaborate closely with fellow staff to ensure safe and efficient multi-modal transportation.

Street Maintenance Workers are expected to approach daily tasks with reliability, respect, and enthusiasm, contributing to a supportive work environment where cooperation and accountability are valued. Attention to detail, willingness to assist teammates, and commitment to maintaining high standards are essential to success in this role.

Through consistent effort and teamwork, the Street Maintenance Worker helps create efficient transportation systems that reflect community pride and promote positive user experiences.

Expected Hours of Work

Hours are typically Monday-Friday from 7 am to 3 pm. In addition to working hours, staff may be required to work additional events, including participation in scheduled rotation of stand‑by duties.

Hours may include nights, weekends, and holidays.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals to perform these essential functions involving construction, operation and maintenance of City streets:

  • Construct and maintain streets, parking lots, bridges, alleys, and other City property, including pothole patching, cut‑outs, paving, milling, and deploying traffic control or directing traffic to protect the work site.
  • Use concrete materials and processes to repair and maintain City sidewalks and curbs.
  • Repair and maintain traffic signs, pavement markers, street lights, and traffic signals in compliance with Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
  • Continually clean and sweep streets, parking lots, trails, alleys, and other City property.
  • Perform forestry tasks including tree‑trimming and tree removal.
  • Ensure clear and safe winter streets by plowing, distributing winter chemicals, shoveling, and snow‑blowing City streets and affiliated properties.
  • Operate and maintain city vehicles and equipment.
  • Assist with public works maintenance responsibilities across other divisions as needed.

    Supervisory Responsibility

    This position does not have employee supervisory responsibilities.

    Minimum Qualifications
    • 18 years of age or older.
    • High School diploma or GED.
    • Valid driver’s license.
    • Valid MN Commercial Class A driver’s license, or ability to obtain within 12 months of start date.
    • Ability to operate computer.
    • Ability to operate equipment, acquire licenses, and complete trainings required for this position.
    • Ability to complete the essential duties and responsibilities of the position with or without reasonable accommodations.
    Desired Qualifications
    • Experience with safe operation and maintenance of hand tools, power tools, and both heavy and light construction and maintenance equipment.
    • Two years street maintenance experience, including paving, concrete, and equipment maintenance.
    • Experience working in other divisions of municipal Public Works (Parks, Utilities, and/or Vehicle Maintenance).
    • Experience working with an asset management software program.

    Work Environment & Physical Demands

    Work is most often conducted outdoors, often under adverse and extreme weather conditions. Exposure to hazardous conditions, including operating power tools and equipment, and toxic materials, including raw sewage, garbage, landscaping chemicals, and hot asphalt. Employee is subject to noise while operating equipment and general noises in outdoor city environments.
