DutiesThe Transportation Generalist maintains and reconstructs roadways, traffic barriers, and roadsides; performs bituminous road repairs and culvert cleaning; guards rail repair; conducts preventive maintenance on highway equipment; operates tractor mowers, small rollers, and snow/ice equipment; removes objects from roadways; sets up traffic controls in high‑volume traffic; and responds to accidents, spill cleanup, rut repair, and wildlife incidents. Additional duties include landscaping of roadside vegetation, rest‑area maintenance, and snow‑and‑ice control operations such as removing snow, applying de‑icing chemicals, and operating snowplow equipment.
- Perform landscaping duties on roadside (tree limb chipping, stump removal, grinding)
- Maintain rest areas, building and grounds (vegetation control, parking surface repairs)
- Drive and operate heavy equipment for snow and ice duties, including snow removal from roadways and shoulders, application of anti‑icing chemicals, removal of frozen ice from culverts, and night patrols
- Prepare and inspect winter equipment, such as snowplow equipment and sanders
The Associate is a trainee position with a 12‑month probationary period. The role focuses on learning road surface maintenance and snow/ice control activities to keep roadways safe and in good repair. Incumbents may work day, evening, overnight, or night shifts and may be required to report to work within one hour of a call.
Shift DifferentialEmployees working shifts that begin before 6:00 A.M. or end after 6:00 P.M. receive a differential of $2.25 per hour for those times, in addition to the regular rate of pay.
Night Maintenance Premium PayEmployees working night shifts lasting three months or more receive a premium of $2.00 per hour for shifts that start between 7:00 P.M. and 12:00 A.M., in addition to the regular rate and any shift differential.
Minimum Qualifications Transportation Generalist- A valid Class A or B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with no air brake restriction and a tanker endorsement. Specify CDL type (A or B) on the résumé.
- One (1) year of experience in snow and ice, soils, road surface maintenance, roadside maintenance, bridge maintenance, signs, or related activities such as commercial landscaping, heavy‑equipment operation, or farm work.
- Or a completed Heavy Equipment Operation and Maintenance Program of at least 60 semester credits (or 90 quarter credits), which can substitute for one year of experience. Transcripts must be submitted.
- Working knowledge of English sufficient to read, write, speak, and understand written and oral information; communicate with employees and the public; and maintain routine written logs.
