ResponsibilitiesGeneral duties include maintaining roads and ensuring public safety throughout all weather and seasonal conditions. The position may focus on specific tasks depending on the season.
Summer Responsibilities- Maintain and reconstruct roadways, right‑of‑ways, and roadway shoulders with gravel, bituminous, and concrete surfaces; maintain traffic barriers and participate in bituminous road repair, culvert cleaning, and guardrail repair.
- Install catch basins, place and remove Adopt‑A‑Highway bags, and perform drainage and shoulder repair along roadsides.
- Perform preventive maintenance on highway equipment and operate tractor mowers and small rollers.
- Set up traffic control in high‑volume traffic in accordance with the Temporary Traffic Zone Layouts field manual.
- Maintain landscaping duties, including planting, watering, seeding, sodding, trimming, removal, and stump grinding.
- Maintain roadways for snow and ice control: remove snow from roadways and shoulders, widen roadways of large accumulations, and apply anti‑icing and de‑icing chemicals.
- Maintain and inspect winter equipment, including snowplows, cutting edges, and sanders; clean equipment after storms.
- Perform preseason snow route inspection and post‑storm cleanup of bridges, guardrails, sidewalks, crossovers, medians, and ramps.
- Document snow and ice data for accurate reporting of inventory and resource management.
This is a full‑time, year‑round position with seasonal schedules. Summer hours are Monday through Thursday, 6:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (4–10 hour) shifts, and winter hours are Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Hours may include overtime or various shifts depending on emergency situations.
Physical RequirementsMust be able to work nights, be exposed to weather elements (hot and cold), drive a motor vehicle in on‑ and off‑road conditions, walk on even and uneven terrain, rotate through various body positions, operate machinery, and occasionally lift or carry between 50 and 70 pounds. Must use personal protective equipment to protect head, eyes, hearing, respiration, visibility, and feet.
Additional RequirementsSuccessful candidate must pass past‑employer reference checks, a criminal history check, and education/License verification. The position requires a valid Commercial Driver’s License and a Federal Department of Transportation pre‑employment drug test.
Minimum Qualifications Transportation GeneralistMinimum Qualifications
- One (1) year of experience in snow and ice, soils, road surface maintenance, roadside maintenance, bridge maintenance, signs, or related activities.
- OR successful completion of a Heavy Equipment Operation and Maintenance Program of at least 60 semester credits (or 90 quarter credits) with transcripts.
- Valid MN Commercial Driver’s License Class “B” with tanker endorsement and no air brake restriction; must upgrade to Class A with tanker endorsement within 30 days of hire.
- Working knowledge of English, sufficient to read, write, speak, and understand written information, communicate with employees and the public, and maintain routine written logs.
Minimum Qualifications
- Must possess a Commercial Driver’s Permit with no air brake restriction; tanker endorsement must be obtained by hire date.
- Must obtain a Class A CDL within 3 months of hire.
- Working knowledge of English as described above.
Candidates who receive a contingent job offer will be invited to take a computerized Math and Reading Assessment Test. The required passing scores are level 3 or higher for Math and level 4 or higher for Reading.
