Overview
The Pipe Layer is responsible for assembling, connecting, and constructing pipe systems for storm or sanitation sewers, drains, and water mains. Ensures ground is prepped and trenches dug out for pipes. Aligns pipes and seals joints together with cement or glue.
Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesReasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
- Configures pipe routes, cut pipes to required lengths and aligns pipes to prepare them for welding or sealing.
- Ensures pipes are fitted and aligned using grade rods or transit levels.
- Installs or repairs sanitary or storm, water sewer structures or pipe systems;
Locates existing pipes needing repair or replacement, using magnetic or radio indicators; pulls out defective or misaligned pipes. - Checks slopes for conformance to requirements, using levels or lasers.
- Lay outs pipe routes, following written instructions or blueprints and coordinating layouts with supervisors.
- Digs trenches to desired or required depths by hand or using trenching tools, slides pipe into trenches and covers pipes with dirt or other material.
- Operates equipment, such as pickup truck, rollers, front-end loaders, or backhoes.
- Grade or level trench bases, using tamping machines or hand tools.
- Inspects places where pipes are fitted together to ensure pipes are spaced out properly and according to specifications.
- Taps and drills holes into pipes to introduce auxiliary lines or devices.
- Performs continual maintenance on pipes and replace those needing repair.
- Performs other duties directed by Foreman.

Completion of High school diploma or equivalent preferred. Must have at least five (5) years of experience. Ability to follow specific directions. Ability to communicate and understand English. Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions; work within standards of accuracy; repeat tasks of short duration according to a set procedure; and evaluate information using measurable standards.
Prefer prior training on competent person, confined space and trench safety.

The position lifts heavy objects, walks and stands for long periods of time and performs strenuous physical labor under adverse field conditions. The employee frequently (51%-75% of the duration of the shift) lifts, pushes pulls or carries objects of up to 50 lbs.; uses abdominal and lower back muscles frequently (51%-75% of the duration of the shift) to provide support; and rarely (1%-25% of the duration of the shift) jumps, sprints or throws objects.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently (51%-75% of the duration of the shift) required to stand; walk; reach with hands and arms and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally (26%-50% of the duration of the shift) required to sit. Will be frequently (51%-75% of the duration of the shift) using hands to finger, use arms and hands to signal, grab, hold, turn, handle, or feel;
objects, materials, controls and tools. Will occasionally (26%-50% of the duration of the shift) work at heights, climb, and work off of platforms; balance and stoop, kneel, crouch or craw. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close and peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., 40 hours per week. Occasional evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand.
Work EnvironmentWhile performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts and vibration. The noise levels at the job sites are usually loud. The position regularly works near moving mechanical parts and in outside conditions that include inclement weather, heat and humidity, and exposure to dust and asphalt.
