Charps, headquartered in Clearbrook, MN, maintains a solid reputation as a preferred pipeline contractor in the energy industry and we are looking for a dedicated Field Safety Specialist to join our team. This position is a field‑based role supporting active projects and will be integral in advancing and supporting our company‑wide commitment to safety.
As a Field Safety Specialist, you will work directly with crews, Foremen, Superintendents and Project Managers to support safe and efficient field operations. You will assist with planning work safely, identifying hazards early, and helping crews correct issues before incidents occur. You will support operations by assisting with site‑specific safety planning, attending project kick‑off meetings and weekly project meetings, and participating in weekly Safety Department meetings.
You will perform frequent site inspections and audits, document findings in company reporting software, review results with field leadership, and assist with immediate corrective actions when needed. You will regularly participate in Field Level Hazard Assessments (FLHA/JSA/tailgate meetings) and engage employees in practical safety conversations. The role also includes onboarding new hires and rehires, facilitating orientations, conducting training and fit testing, and performing Operator Qualification (OQ) evaluations.
You will assist Foremen with incident investigations and communicate corrective action recommendations to VP of HSE. Identifying recurring trends observed in the field and communicating them to the Safety Director and Operations leadership will be a key responsibility. Frequent travel between projects is expected.
- Excellent communication skills are essential.
- Ability to comfortably navigate various computer programs and software
- Basic knowledge of OSHA regulations and trenching/excavation safety
- Comfortable working outdoors in various climates and conditions
- Certifications such as OQ Evaluator, Veriforce Evaluator, fit testing, and drug/alcohol testing are beneficial but can be obtained after hire
- Construction, pipeline, or excavation experience preferred
- A background in safety is helpful but not required
