Project Engineer - Heavy Civil & Highway Construction
The Project Engineer supports the planning, coordination, and execution of heavy highway and civil construction projects at Ames Construction to ensure work is performed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with contract requirements. This role works closely with project management, field supervision, subcontractors, and inspectors to deliver high‑quality infrastructure projects, including roadways, bridges, and other civil structures.
Key Responsibilities- Assist in the planning, coordination, and execution of construction activities to support project schedules and budgets.
- Design, review, and implement temporary works and construction means and methods with a strong emphasis on safety.
- Inspect installed work, equipment, and materials; identify issues and coordinate corrective actions as needed.
- Provide on‑site direction and technical support to foremen, crews, and subcontractors.
- Monitor project progress and prepare accurate daily reports, quantities, and documentation.
- Perform quality control inspections to ensure work complies with contract documents, plans, and specifications.
- Verify materials and workmanship meet project requirements and approved submittals.
- Enforce safety policies, OSHA regulations, and proper use of PPE on the job site.
- Support project cost tracking, schedule updates, and coordination with project stakeholders.
- Assist with communication between the field, project management, owners, and inspectors.
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
- Minimum of one (1) year of experience as a Project Engineer, Field Engineer, or similar role in heavy civil or highway construction.
- Strong understanding of construction methods, equipment, and materials used in civil infrastructure projects.
- Working knowledge of OSHA regulations and job‑site safety practices.
- High attention to detail with strong organizational skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Proven analytical and problem‑solving abilities.
- Ability to work extended hours, including early mornings, nights, weekends, and occasional holidays, as required to meet project schedules.
Projects will be located in the Minneapolis and St. Paul Metro and surrounding area. Subsequent projects will be nationally based. Travel between job sites may be required depending on project location. Work is primarily performed on active construction job sites, including highways, roadways, and heavy civil infrastructure projects. Regular exposure to outdoor weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, wind, and dust.
Position requires walking, standing, climbing, bending, and lifting in a construction environment. Frequent interaction with heavy equipment, moving machinery, traffic, and construction hazards; strict adherence to safety protocols is required. Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) is mandatory at all job sites.
Base salary range is $70,000–$90,000 a year, which varies depending on many factors, including relevant experience, skills, and knowledge.
