Manager I – Solar Estimating
As a Manager I – Solar Estimating, you'll lead the preconstruction estimating team through every stage of the bidding process, ensuring bid accuracy, technical compliance, and competitive pricing for utility-scale solar projects. You'll oversee the coordination of estimating procedures and preconstruction activities while partnering with Engineering, Supply Chain, Construction, and Business Development to develop winning proposals. Your day moves between mentoring estimators, reviewing estimates, evaluating project risks and opportunities, and driving continuous improvements to preconstruction processes and systems.
You'll also play a critical role in transitioning awarded projects from estimating to operations by coordinating with subcontractors, suppliers, vendors, engineers, and clients to ensure a seamless handoff from preconstruction to construction. From supporting contract negotiations to establishing project execution strategies, you'll help position projects—and your team—for success while fostering collaboration across the organization.
The Role
- Displays personal and professional ethics and complies with and enforces company policies and procedures during project estimates, including utilizing company estimating software, performing bid reviews, etc. Takes personal responsibility to ensure that a quality bid has been produced.
- Develops department strategy and vision with regularly reporting of relevant industry precedents and procedures.
- Advises and supports Manager Estimating with estimate planning in preparation for project pre-bid meeting, schedule creation, and proposal preparation.
- Supports the Director of Estimating and Vice President, Procurement to develop Mega project review document for Executive approval(s).
- Supervises and provides development of subordinates through mentoring, formal training and exposure to diverse work experiences.
- Verifies that the team identifies and calculates cost of project quality and safety requirements (training, ppe) and determines JHA risks and includes costs in estimates.
- Ensures the pursuit, selection and utilization of subcontractors who meet corporate risk management criteria.
- Ensures estimating team conducts project site visits, reviews cost/production reports in order to compare actual cost, plan the estimate and conduct special studies to develop and establish standard cost data.
- Bachelor's degree in construction related discipline.
- 5 or more years of applicable preconstruction and/or construction experience or equivalent combinations of technical training and/or related experience in estimating, project management, contract negotiations and sound construction methods; with an emphasis on safety and quality.
- Experience leading estimating or preconstruction teams supporting utility-scale solar or renewable energy projects.
- Strong understanding of estimating methodologies, construction means and methods, procurement, and project execution.
