Duties- Function as an independent provider for routine and moderately complex eye care, referring unusual or advanced cases for consultation.
- Diagnose and treat visual and ocular conditions through comprehensive external and internal eye examinations.
- Detect neuromuscular impairments and binocular vision anomalies.
- Prescribe corrective lenses (including contact lenses), vision therapy, and authorized pharmacologic treatments.
- Administer topical ophthalmic and oral medications as permitted by state licensure.
- Perform minor surgical procedures, including foreign body removal, corneal debridement, and suture removal.
- Coordinate referrals for urgent or emergent ocular conditions.
- Provide emergency eye care services in outpatient settings.
- Independently manage common ocular diseases and systemic conditions with ocular manifestations, referring complex cases to specialty care.
- Serve as a consultant to other healthcare professionals regarding ocular findings and vision assessment.
- Conduct vision screenings for schools, Head Start programs, and patients at risk for diabetic retinopathy.
- Provide patient and community education on eye health and vision safety.
