Support Para educator (Special Education) Purpose StatementThe job of Para educator – Special Education was established for the purpose of providing support to the instructional program within the assigned classroom, with specific responsibility for assisting in the supervision, care, and instruction of special‑needs students in the regular classroom, resource room, or a self‑contained classroom; assisting in implementing plans for instruction; monitoring student behavior during classroom and non‑classroom time;
and providing information to appropriate school personnel. This job reports to the assigned administrator.
- Adapts classroom activities, assignments, and/or materials under the direction of the supervising teacher to support and reinforce classroom objectives.
- Administers tests, homework, make‑up work, etc., to support teachers in the classroom.
- Assists medically fragile or physically disabled students to maintain personal hygiene.
- Communicates with supervising instructional staff and professional support personnel to evaluate progress and implement IEP objectives.
- Implements, under the supervision of the assigned teacher, behavioral plans designed by the IEP team for students with behavior disorders or other special conditions to reinforce learning concepts.
- Maintains instructional materials and/or manual and electronic files/records to ensure availability of items, provide written reference, and meet mandated requirements.
- Monitors students during assigned periods within a variety of school environments (e.g., rest rooms, art, music, physical education, playgrounds, hallways, bus loading zones, cafeteria, parking lots, vocational learning programs, etc.) to maintain a safe and positive learning environment.
- Provides, under the supervision of the assigned teacher, instruction to students in a variety of individual and group activities (e.g., academic subjects, social skills, daily living skills, etc.) to reinforce instructional objectives, implement IEP plans, and ensure student success in school.
- Administers (when instructed) immediate first aid and medical assistance as directed by a health care professional (e.g., diapering, lifting, medication, etc.) to meet immediate health care needs.
- Responds to emergency situations to resolve immediate safety concerns.
- Attends meetings and in‑service presentations/workshops (e.g., first aid, CPR, emergency procedures, technology, etc.) to acquire and convey information related to job functions.
- Performs other related duties as assigned to ensure efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

– Minimum Qualifications
Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:
- Adherence to safety practices and operation of standard office equipment and relevant software applications.
- Preparation and maintenance of accurate records.
- Basic math (including fractions, percents, and ratios), understanding of English language and grammar, and reading of a variety of manuals.
- Writing documents in prescribed formats and presenting information to others.
- Understanding of complex, multi‑step written and oral instructions.
- Knowledge of movement, medical equipment, instructional procedures, age‑appropriate student activities, safety practices, conflict resolution, and stages of child development/behavior.
- Ability to communicate and work with diverse groups of children, establish supportive relationships with students and staff, maintain confidentiality, set priorities, work as part of a team, and handle frequent interruptions.
- Ability to collate data, schedule activities, and use basic job‑related equipment.
- Flexibility to work with others in various circumstances and problem‑solving skills to identify issues and create action plans.
Work under the direct supervision of the teacher. Utilization of resources from other work units may be required. Continuous opportunities exist to impact the organization’s services.
Working EnvironmentPhysical demands include significant lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some climbing and balancing; some stooping, kneeling, and crouching. The job involves exposure to risk of injury and/or illness in a clean environment.
ExperienceJob‑related experience is desired.
EducationTargeted job‑related education that meets the organization’s prerequisite requirements: a high school diploma, successful completion of college‑level coursework, or successful completion of the Para Pro Assessment is desired.
