Generally 6.5 hours per day
Position Summary:
The Level III Autism Program Paraprofessional provides direct instructional, behavioral, communication, and social-emotional support to students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) who require intensive educational programming. The paraprofessional works collaboratively with special education staff, general education teachers, related service providers, and families to support students in meeting their educational goals.
Qualifications:
Candidates must have successfully completed the Para educator Assessment or hold a two-year or four-year degree from an accredited institution.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide direct support to students with autism in academic, behavioral, social, communication, and daily living skill development.
- Implement instructional strategies and interventions designed by special education staff.
- Assist students in participating successfully in classroom, school, and community-based activities.
- Support transitions between activities, classrooms, and environments.
- Collect and maintain accurate behavioral and academic data.
- Support students in developing self-regulation, coping, and social-emotional skills.
- Respond calmly and effectively during behavioral escalations while following district procedures and student support plans.
- Participate in crisis prevention and intervention strategies as trained by the district.
- Support students in using verbal communication, visual supports, augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) devices, and social communication systems.
- Facilitate peer interactions and social engagement opportunities.
- Reinforce communication goals established by educational and related service teams.
- Work closely with special education teachers, speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists, school psychologists, and other support staff.
- Participate in team meetings, training opportunities, and professional development activities.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding student information and records.
- Communicate student progress and concerns to supervising staff.
- Maintain confidentiality and professionalism.
- Adapt to changing student needs and priorities.
Preferred Experience:
Supporting AAC systems and visual supports. Background in working with individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder or other developmental disabilities. Training in crisis prevention/intervention, behavior management, or de-escalation techniques.
