In response to persistent substitute teacher shortages, Minnesota has now made permanent a flexible “short-call emergency sub” pathway previously in pilot form. It eases the entry into substitute teaching by extending eligibility beyond traditionally licensed teachers. 5 Eyewitness News
Who Can Apply- Individuals with at least an associate’s degree
, or - Those holding a high school diploma (or equivalent) who've served as education support personnel or paraprofessionals in the district for a minimum of one academic year. Minnesota Senate Applicants must also pass a district background check in line with standard safety procedures.

- Compensation will be at least the district’s short-call substitute rate

Albany Area Schools will guide applicants through the licensing process via the Professional Educator Licensing and Standards Board (PELSB). This includes:
- Providing or coordinating required district-provided substitute training

- Successfully complete a background check
