The Biology Department at Carleton College seeks applicants for a tenure-track position in Animal Physiology beginning September 1, 2027. We expect to make an appointment at the Assistant Professor level. The successful candidate will demonstrate a strong commitment to teaching and research with undergraduate students in a liberal arts environment. We are particularly interested in candidates who are committed to inclusive excellence in their teaching.
We seek applicants who are dedicated to furthering the College’s goals of closing equity gaps and providing a safe learning environment for all students. A completed Ph.D. in biology or a related field with postdoctoral experience is preferred, but applicants who will complete their Ph.D. by June 2027 will be considered. Members of groups traditionally underrepresented in Biology are strongly encouraged to apply.
The position will involve teaching five courses per year within our trimester system, including Human Physiology and Lab, and regular contributions to Energy Flow in Biological Systems (BIOL
126), which is one of our introductory courses. The successful candidate will also develop an upper-level seminar related to their areas of expertise and research strengths. All laboratory courses benefit from the support of skilled technical staff.
Biology faculty are expected to develop an active research program with Carleton undergraduates that contributes to their sub-field. The College offers support for faculty research programs, including student stipends and support for grant writing. In addition, support for all aspects of faculty work is provided by College-wide and department mentoring programs, cohort activities for new faculty, Provost’s Office support , and extensive optional programming by our Perlman Center for Learning and Teaching .
The expected starting salary range for this position is between $87,480 and $93,290. Actual pay will be adjusted based on job-related factors permitted by law, such as experience and training; licensure and certifications; market factors; departmental budgets; and responsibility.
