General Definition of WorkUnder the direction of the building Administrator and Director of Special Education, the Special Education Coordinator performs intermediate professional work by coordinating the delivery of Special Education Services, providing due process supervision, supporting special education staff and teams, and related work as apparent or assigned. Continuous oversight and leadership are exercised over case managers. This position does not have a student caseload.

Essential Functions- Consults with staff, administration, and parents in the creation of an evaluation plan and reports that meet the requirements of the Minnesota Department of Education.
- Provides coordination of the Assessment Team process and conducts components of special education evaluations which may include administering and interpreting standardized evaluation tools for the purpose of educational evaluation planning and report writing, conducting observations of students in the classroom, and interviewing students and parents as assigned in the evaluation.
- Serves as the primary contact for the parent for an initial evaluation.
- Regularly consults with building administrators and administrative staff.
- Provides input into the development of the Individualized Education Program (IEP) or Individual Family Service Plan (IFSP) for students.
- Serves as Administrative Designee in meetings.
- Coordinates special transportation.
- Organizes and coordinates ESY planning and programs.
- Adheres to procedural requirements, including due process timelines. Provides support to special education teachers by reviewing IEPs, timelines, progress reports, and other due process paperwork, as necessary.
- Coordinates and/or collaborates on the delivery of special education services including assigning and managing caseloads, consulting in the use of paraprofessionals, setting up behavioral consultations, oversight of restrictive procedures.
- Attends coordinator meetings with other building level special education coordinators and the Director of Special Education.
- Maintains special education records, files, and reports; obtains records for students transferring to the District; shares records for students transferring out of the District; disposes of students records when required.
- Collaborates and consults with education professionals and community service providers (i.e. social services, public health, medical providers, etc.) regarding the needs of students.
- Oversight of building special education department purchases, fiscal responsibility and operations of building special education programming (time and effort, MA billing, etc.)
- Serves as building representative for hiring, onboarding, and scheduling (with input of special education teachers) of paraprofessionals
- Regular, prompt attendance is essential.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Current knowledge of special education law, rules, and regulations, and District policies and procedures.
- Skilled in administering, scoring, and interpreting special education assessment tools and procedures.
- Comprehensive knowledge of assessment manuals and educational reports; thorough knowledge of staffing reports; comprehensive knowledge of evaluation reports, Individual Education Plans, and understanding due process.
- Thorough knowledge of standard office software, accounting software, and special education forms software; thorough knowledge of standard office equipment; ability to make arithmetic computations using whole numbers, fractions, and decimals; ability to compute rates, ratios, and percentages
- Annually trained in use of restrictive procedures and laws regarding use of restrictive procedures. Gathers/oversees paperwork regarding a restrictive procedure and may serve on the Oversight Committee.
