Traveling Field Technician (OSP / Aerial GIS)

Are you someone who enjoys working outside, traveling, and being part of large-scale infrastructure projects? We're looking for a Traveling Field Technician to support aerial (OSP) design projects for telecommunications and power networks.
In this role, you'll be out in the field collecting real-world data that directly supports how critical infrastructure is designed and built. You'll work alongside an experienced technician, gain hands-on training, and build a career path into senior field roles or office-based design positions.
What You'll Do
As a Field Technician, you'll play a key role in gathering essential data for aerial network design:
+ Survey and document utility poles, including location, height, and condition
+ Identify and record existing cables and equipment, including ownership and usage
+ Capture clear, accurate photos of infrastructure and surrounding environments
+ Measure poles and structures while walking residential and commercial areas
+ Support permitting efforts by collecting required field documentation
+ Participate in site walks to verify conditions for construction planning
+ Assist in preparing material summaries for aerial projects
+ Provide basic design support and insights from the field
+ Utilize GIS and CAD tools (AutoCAD) to support mapping and documentation
+ Maintain accurate records for engineering and design teams
+ Work closely with a lead technician to complete daily tasks efficiently

What We're Looking For
Basic Qualifications:
+ 0-1 years of telecom or utility field experience (or similar hands-on work)
+ Background in construction, landscaping, surveying, or outdoor labor preferred
+ Comfortable working outdoors in varying weather conditions
+ Ability to walk long distances and perform physically active tasks
+ Strong attention to detail and accuracy in data collection
+ Willingness to travel regularly (Monday-Friday, overnight stays required)
Technical &
Soft Skills:
+ Basic familiarity with GIS or AutoCAD (training provided)
+ Strong communication and teamwork skills
+ Ability to handle field equipment and measuring tools
+ Reliable, adaptable, and eager to learn
Nice-to-Have (Not Required)
+ Experience in telecommunications or utilities
+ Prior travel-based role experience
+ Interest in learning OSP aerial design
+ Exposure to permitting or municipal coordination
Work Environment & Travel
+ 70% travel across regional project sites (overnight stays common)
+ 30% local work
+ Work outdoors in residential and commercial areas
+ Partner daily with a lead technician
+ Operations paused in extreme conditions (e.g.,
-10°F or below)
+ Year-round work supported by multi-year contracts

Job Type & Location
This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Woodbury, MN.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $22.00 - $25.00/hr.
