This position will be used to establish an eligibility list for future full‑time openings within the Sheriff’s Office. The Deputy Sheriff is responsible for protection of life and property, crime prevention, criminal apprehension, enforcement of state and federal law, and local ordinances through routine patrol, investigation, and traffic regulation. Work assignments may include duties with investigation, civil process, court security, K9, drug taskforce, mobile field force, boat and water and emergency response unit.
The Deputy Sheriff works to strengthen our community and participates in community engagement activities. This position reports directly to an assigned Sergeant. Working in this role exposes the individual to danger due to the nature of the duties. Deputies must act without direct supervision, exercising sound personal judgment during high‑stress and critical situations. The on‑duty Deputy Sheriff must be knowledgeable of law enforcement methods and techniques to provide services during emergency events.
They conduct criminal and non‑criminal investigations and support the correctional division by transporting inmates or handling adverse situations. Communication is professional and coordinated with local, state law enforcement, and communications personnel to perform duties.
The 2026 hourly range for this position is $32.37 to $48.55.
Essential Functions/Responsibilities
The following duties are normal for this classification. These are not exclusive or all‑inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned.
Position Duties- Patrols McLeod County roads, cities, and areas under contractual agreement to protect people and property by preventing crime and enforcing statutes and ordinances.
- Operates a Sheriff's Office vehicle and necessary technology and safety devices (police radio, computer, radar, firearms). Also operates boats, all‑terrain vehicles, and other equipment for waterways and other terrain.
- Responds to calls for service from the public and other agencies regarding criminal activity ranging from petty misdemeanors to felony‑level offenses; determines if laws have been violated, takes enforcement, mediates disputes, administers first aid, and advises complainants.
- Conducts initial investigations, collecting evidence, gathering suspect and witness statements or interviews, and other relevant activities as required.
- Maintains chain of custody for any evidence gathered.
- Responds to and investigates during accidents and catastrophic events; administers first aid, gathers evidence, and assists in securing the scene of an incident.
- Prepares detailed and accurate written and electronic reports and records reflecting involvement and observation of incidents and activities during a work shift; maintains records for investigations, citations, training, and other agencies.
- Enforces Minnesota State Statutes, Federal Laws, and local ordinances; issues citations and/or places violators under arrest as needed, transports and processes prisoners, and transports other civilians as required.
- Participates in court and other legal proceedings; provides truthful and credible testimony regarding facts of cases, law enforcement procedures, evidence collection, and investigation findings.
- Provides support to the correctional division through inmate transport and/or direct assistance during adverse situations with prisoners.
- Serves arrest warrants for all offense levels, civil process papers, and participates in sheriff sales (auctions) as directed.
- Conducts criminal and non‑criminal investigations, interviews victims, witnesses, and suspects, gathers and processes evidence.
- Weighs and measures loads on trucks or commercial vehicles during road restrictions.
- Assists other law enforcement agencies with emergency and non‑emergency activities.
- Coordinates activities with peace officers regarding special assignments such as warrant attempts, traffic saturations, and other programs (Toward Zero Deaths).
