Job Summary
Reporting to the Director of Pharmacy, this role supports pharmacy operations under the supervision of licensed pharmacists. The Pharmacy Technician performs essential pharmacy functions to ensure optimal pharmaceutical care within a healthcare setting located in the Midwest region of the United States.
Essential Responsibilities- Efficiently delivers medications to nursing units and returns items as needed, completing rounds promptly and ensuring proper storage of refrigerated items.
- Maintains and stocks automated dispensing cabinets accurately, ensuring correct medication placement, counts, and expiration tracking.
- Performs aseptic compounding of parenteral admixtures and sterile dosage forms, adhering to proper techniques and quality control documentation.
- Processes requisitions and floor stock for nursing and ancillary units, maintaining appropriate logs and stock levels while removing expired items.
- Handles controlled substances with care, including preparation of proof‑of‑use sheets, restocking, waste management, and compliance with regulations.
- Assists pharmacists with order entry, medication labeling, and customer service, including phone triage and issue resolution.
- Restocks anesthesia dispensing cabinets, trays, and kits, ensuring accurate documentation and inventory management.
- Packages bulk medications properly, maintaining controlled substance logs and submitting items for pharmacist verification.
- Performs miscellaneous duties following departmental policies, exercising sound judgment and effective time management.
- Supports other technician staff during low staffing periods within training limits.
- Answers phones promptly with a professional and friendly demeanor, referring calls as appropriate.
- Manages multiple priorities effectively and assists in training new employees and students.
- Maintains a professional appearance and adheres to organizational dress code.
- Follows hospital and departmental procedures and projects a positive image.
- Adaptable to change and interruptions.
- Motivated to improve skills and assist others.
- Demonstrates initiative and responsibility beyond expectations.
- Works well within a team and interacts effectively with diverse individuals.
- Exhibits strong guest relations skills, showing courtesy, compassion, and respect.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Current valid State Pharmacy Technician license.
- National certification through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board within one year of hire.
- Maintains qualifications as outlined in the Pharmacy Department Technician Ladder for Technician I.
- Good verbal and written communication skills.
This position requires independent decision‑making, the ability to prioritize tasks, and coordination with coworkers. Standing and walking are required during shifts. The role involves potential exposure to blood borne pathogens and complies with OSHA risk classifications.
