HR Technology Lead – Workday Payroll & Time
Join 3M as a senior HR Technology Leader specializing in Workday payroll, absence, and time tracking. In this role you will design, configure, and govern global Workday solutions to deliver a compliant, user‑centric employee experience.
About the RoleAs the workday subject‑matter expert you will own end‑to‑end solution design, leading complex configuration of pay calculation rules, accrual logic, eligibility, earnings/deductions, and time valuation. You will collaborate with payroll, HR operations, IT, legal, and compliance to translate business requirements into scalable system designs and drive continuous improvement across the HR tech stack.
Key Responsibilities- Lead advanced Workday design and configuration for payroll, absence, and time tracking modules.
- Coordinate global deployment of absence and time tracking solutions, ensuring compliance and user adoption across all regions.
- Translate union rules, labor regulations, and business policies into scalable system designs.
- Ensure all functional designs adhere to governance, documentation standards, audit controls, and compliance requirements.
- Partner with technical teams on payroll/time-related integrations, data flows, and troubleshooting.
- Oversee and mentor HR Technology Analysts in configuration, testing, and deployment activities.
- Review and approve configuration, test scripts, test results, and documentation to ensure accuracy and audit readiness.
- Lead complex troubleshooting related to gross‑to‑net results, retro calculations, accruals, time valuation, and integration discrepancies.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, local, and international payroll and leave laws.
- Evaluate Workday releases, identify features that improve payroll accuracy, compliance, and processing efficiency, and recommend enhancements.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives in partnership with Payroll Operations, HR Operations, and other HR CoEs.
- Lead functional workshops, design reviews, and decision‑making discussions to align technology solutions with business needs.
- Provide ongoing training, knowledge transfer, and documentation for analysts, HR partners, and payroll team members.
- Communicate system changes, impacts, risks, and recommendations to business leaders and operations teams.
- Champion user‑centric design principles, lead structured testing cycles, and ensure clean data and reliable system performance.
- Proactively identify issues, recommend solutions, and drive long‑term improvements.
- Bachelor’s Degree or higher.
- Minimum 5 years of HR Technology experience in a private, public, government, or military environment.
- Minimum 5 years of Workday configuration experience specializing in Payroll, Absence, and/or Time Tracking.
- Strong knowledge of US Workday Payroll, union rules, shift differentials, premium pay, and complex pay components.
- Experience designing complex pay calculation rules, accrual configurations, and payroll workflows.
- Excellent analytical, troubleshooting, communication, and project‑management skills.
- Experience leading or mentoring analysts or technical team members.
- Workday Pro certification is preferred.
- Experience with Workday Scheduling module is a plus.
This role follows an on‑site working model: at least four days a week at the 3M Center in Maplewood, MN. Travel may include up to 10% domestic or international. Relocation may be authorized.

Compensation & BenefitsExpected compensation range: $141,150 – $172,517 (base pay plus variable incentive pay, if eligible).
