Summary

Under general supervision, installs, relocates, troubleshoots, repairs, performs diagnostic tests and preventative maintenance on mainframe terminals, personal computer workstations and peripherals; determines hardware requirements and needs; tests and evaluates hardware and software for efficiency; and performs related duties as required.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Troubleshoots and repairs personal computer workstations and peripherals
  • Installs and relocates computer workstations and peripherals
  • Performs preventative maintenance work on computers and peripherals
  • Assists users in determination of hardware requirements and needs
  • Performs diagnostic tests on personal computer workstations, microcomputers and peripherals
  • Maintains accurate records of software/hardware installation and relocation
  • Tests and evaluates hardware and software for efficiency and compatibility with existing network systems
  • Responds to after-hour calls related to network problems
  • Performs related duties as required
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with an Associate's Degree in Computer Science, Electronics, Management Information Systems or a closely related field, and two years computer and peripheral repair experience; OR successful completion of a relevant program from an accredited technical school and two years computer and peripheral repair experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Good knowledge of software packages and operating systems; knowledge of diagnostic software programs and restructuring of hard drives
  • Skill in training user on commercial software packages; skill in troubleshooting and repairing network equipment and peripherals; skill in installing hardware and software; skill in completing routine upgrades and repairs on personal computers; skill in logical problem solving
  • Ability to recognize problems and recommend solutions; ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, County employees, appointed and elected officials and outside organizations
  • Must secure and maintain a favorable background investigation
  • Must have available transportation during entire workday; required to travel to remote sites within Bexar County
  • Must have valid driver's license, motor vehicle liability insurance and personal injury insurance
  • May be required to work more than 40 hours during the workweek
  • Required to be on call after hours and weekends on a rotating schedule
Working Environment and Physical Demands:
  • Constantly working in indoors conditions with occasional jail environment exposure
  • Work environment involves some exposure to temperature variations and occasional exposure to high voltage equipment
  • Frequently moves objects weighing up to 10-25 pounds; occasionally moves objects weighing up to 50-75 pounds
  • Occasionally moves about office
  • Frequently communicates with others; must be able to exchange accurate information
  • Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery
  • Constantly positions self to maintain computers, including under desks and in close-space areas
  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position
