PURPOSE OF POSITION: This position will enforce all local, state and federal laws, provide and serve the citizens of the County and the State, render aid during emergency situations or disasters, investigate criminal offenses, make arrests, and aid in successfully obtaining convictions in a Court of Law.

WORK PERFORMED/JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Respond to all emergency situations, both while on and off duty, such as car accidents, farm accidents, storms, explosions, etc.
  • Render assistance and aid to the injured, protect property and the well-being of the public.
  • Enforce all local, state and federal laws.
  • Assist in civil, criminal and traffic investigations, which involves gathering evidence, marking, preserving, and protecting the same for judicial use, interviewing witnesses, suspected perpetrators, and victims.
  • Assist in the interrogations of suspects; complete investigative reports and all reports as required.
  • Physically arrest criminal perpetrators.
  • Give clear, honest testimony in Court.
  • Serve arrest warrants.
  • Transport mental patients, prisoners, and blood to area hospitals or other security facilities, and deliver death notices to family.
  • Operate motor vehicles and other equipment associated with law enforcement.
  • May be required to repeatedly perform small mechanical motions of keys and other devices used on a continuing basis.
  • Arrest and/or transport persons during all hours and weather conditions.
  • Work in other divisions of the Sheriff’s Office as required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Must have the ability to analyze various situations and react accordingly within split seconds. Tactfully, efficiently, and effectively communicate with the public when obtaining sensitive information regarding investigations. Essential to keep individuals subdued during arrest and/or transport. Knowledgeable in the following areas: criminal investigations, interrogation, rules of evidence, preservation of evidence, death investigation, jail security, communications practices, federal, state and local laws, procedures for settling internal grievances, promotion of high morale in the department, and knowledge of Courts.

    Knowledge, or the ability to acquire such knowledge in a relatively short period of time, of street and highway systems, geography of the County, and the location of buildings and areas requiring special law enforcement services. This position shall be filled in accordance with civil service rules and regulations.

    MINIMUM TRAINING, EXPERIENCE OR CERTIFICATIONS: Minimum of an Associate of Arts (A.A.) Degree, preferably in Criminal Justice. Must be a full-time POST licensed peace officer or POST licensed eligible. Must be a United States Citizen. Must have no felony convictions. This position shall be filled in accordance with civil service rules and regulations. Must possess a valid Driver’s License.

    PHYSICAL EFFORT: Heavy to very heavy physical activities requiring climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, handling, feeling, talking, hearing, near and far acuity, depth perception, accommodation, field of vision, and control of others. The employee must exert in excess of 100 lbs. of force occasionally and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently. Work in the field will include exposure to weather, noise, confined/restricted areas, as well as inside work in an office setting.
