Must be POST licensed or eligible by June 1, 2027.

Shift differential of $1.00/hour for any hours worked from 6pm - 6am.
OT rate paid for call back time, court time and for any hours worked on a holiday.
Employees certified as field training officer, use of force, taser or firearms also receive a shift premium while in trainer capacity.

Job Summary:

The Patrol Deputy Sheriff is a licensed peace officer responsible for a broad range of public safety duties including but not limited to proactive patrol, emergency response to calls, criminal investigations, crash scene management, death investigation, civil process service, community engagement, and emergency scene leadership. Working mostly independently, Deputies are expected to enforce the law fairly, build trust through community policing and professionally investigate all types of incidents—from routine calls to major crimes—while maintaining the highest standards of evidence collection and handling, compliance with statutes and rules of evidence and criminal procedure, documentation, and interpersonal conduct.

Not only is the position of Patrol Deputy Sheriff inherently high-risk, but Deputy Sheriffs are required and expected to make split-second, occasionally life or death, decisions while under substantial amounts of stress. Those decisions regularly expose the Deputy Sheriff to risk of significant civil and potentially criminal penalties and sanctions.

• Enforce state, and local laws and ordinances.
• Maintain professionalism at all times.
• Work independently, without direct supervision.
• Respond to and investigate complaints of criminal activity, disturbances, and other emergencies.
  Interview victims and witnesses, documenting statements clearly and accurately.
• Interrogate suspects in accordance with constitutional and statutory requirements.
• Collect, secure, and preserve physical and digital evidence, ensuring and documenting proper chain of custody.
• Prepare and execute legal documents such as search warrants, subpoenas, and court order proposals.
• Arrest suspects and transport prisoners using safe and legal practices.
• Complete timely, detailed reports and maintain organized case files.
• Provide clear, effective testimony in criminal and civil court proceedings.

• Patrol assigned areas to deter crime and respond promptly to calls for service.
• Conduct traffic enforcement and investigate vehicle crashes.
• Assume scene command and control during major incidents or until relieved by a supervisor.
• Respond to and manage medical emergencies, alarms, domestic disturbances, and public hazards.
• Maintain a visible presence and build relationships through regular interaction with the public.

• Build and maintain strong working relationships with community members, other public safety entities, schools, businesses and faith communities.
• Participate in outreach efforts, safety presentations, and crime prevention initiatives.
• Promote open communication with the public and collaborate on solving recurring issues.
• Demonstrate fairness, respect, and cultural sensitivity in all community interactions.

• Serve subpoenas, summonses, protection orders, eviction notices, and other civil legal documents.
• Execute writs and court orders involving property seizure, restitution, or repossession.
• Accurately document all service attempts and ensure timely returns to the courts.
• Act as the Medical Examiner’s death scene investigator, respond to scenes involving unattended, suspicious, or unexpected deaths.
