Backroom Manager – Grocery Department, Hy‑Vee. Non‑Exempt, FLSA.

A back‑room manager is responsible for the efficient receipt, storage, and distribution of products while ensuring a safe, clean environment and providing exceptional customer and internal service.

• Deliver prompt, efficient, and friendly service to customers and internal colleagues.
• Escort customers to desired products and secure items that are out of reach.
• Load and unload heavy items, and perform other tasks to enhance the shopping experience.
• Answer the telephone promptly and offer helpful service to inbound callers.
• Co‑operate with subsidiaries and other store departments to receive product and ensure timely accounting of receipts.
• Plan, prepare, and adjust work schedules; assign duties; and follow up to confirm completion.
• Unload trucks, escort freight into the backroom, and place items in a non‑intrusive area.
• Use forklifts to unload trucks and move pallets.
• Deliver items to their respective departments.
• Verify invoices for accuracy, sign vendor paperwork, and receive all vendor orders.
• Protect the cold food chain and product integrity.
• Coordinate the receipt and lock‑up of controlled items (liquor, cigarettes, pharmacy inventory).
• Return signed receipts for returns to the accounting office promptly.
• Maintain orderly displays and ensure sale‑area convenience for management.
• Maintain a clean and orderly backroom and ensure daily cleanliness of cardboard and trash areas.
• Stay current on forklift and other required certifications.
• Work safely to reduce product damage and spoilage; perform small equipment repairs as needed.
• Maintain strict adherence to company guidelines on personal hygiene, dress, and policy.
• Report to work on schedule and on time.

• Answer outside customer questions and provide assistance when necessary.
• Assist in other store areas as needed.
• Perform other job‑related duties and special projects as required.

• Ability to follow detailed written or verbal instructions.
• Basic math skills for addition, subtraction, tallying figures, and recording.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Capability to request supplies orally or in writing.

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Six months to one year of similar or related experience.
• Supervisory experience.

Must be physically able to exert up to 100lbs occasionally, 50lbs frequently, and 20lbs constantly while moving objects. Requires good vision, depth perception, color vision, and field of vision. Must be able to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, reach, stand, walk, pull, lift, grasp, feel, talk, hear, and perform repetitive motions regularly.

Position is continually exposed to dirt, temperature extremes, dampness, equipment movement hazards, and cleaning chemicals/solvents. Equipment used includes electric pallet jack, hand pallet jack, RPM, intercom system, forklift, telephone, and two‑wheeler.

Hourly starting wage $17.00 to $21.25 depending on experience. Benefit details are available upon request.
