CNC Machinist, Machine Operator, Manufacturing Engineer
The CNC Machinist is responsible for programming, setting up, and operating computer numerical control (CNC) machines to manufacture precision metal and plastic components according to customer specifications and quality standards. This position performs all aspects of machining operations, including machine setup, tooling selection, programming, troubleshooting, inspection, and process optimization. The CNC Machinist is also responsible for estimating machining operations within the JobBOSS ERP system, developing accurate customer quotations, evaluating job profitability, and recommending process improvements to maximize efficiency and profitability.
This role requires strong technical machine knowledge, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently while supporting continuous improvement initiatives throughout the manufacturing process.
- Review jobs for profitability and adjust as needed
- Estimate jobs from customer prints
- Measure dimensions of finished work pieces to ensure conformance to specifications, using precision measuring instruments, templates and fixtures.
- Stop machines to remove finished work pieces, or to change tooling, setup, or work piece placement according to required machining sequences.
- Mount, install, align, and secure tools, attachments fixtures, and work pieces on machines, using hand tools and precision measuring instruments.
- Calculate and set controls to regulate machining factors such as speed, feed, coolant flow, and depth and angle of cut, or enter commands to retrieve, input, or edit.
- Adjust machine feed and speed, change cutting tools, or adjust machine controls when automatic programming is faulty or if machine malfunctions.
- Listen to machines during operation to detect sounds such as those made by dull cutting tools or excessive vibration and adjust machines to compensate for problems.
- Program CNC Lathe and Mill using the latest version of Surfcam.
- Edit CNC program using editing software. (Edit NC)
- Edit "G" code programs using the control of the machine.
- Set up both CNC Lathe and Mill with tooling, fixtures and programs.
- Order tooling material and miscellaneous machining products and keep them in stock and up to date.
- Machine accurate parts and or fixtures using manual lathe and mill.
- Insert control instructions into machine control units to start operation.
- Operate machine on trial run to verify accuracy of machine settings or programmed control data.
- Install machined replacement parts in mechanisms, machines, and equipment, and test operation of unit to ensure functionality and performance.
- Ensure equipment is cleaned, lubricated, and maintained, including utilization when necessary maintenance, dept. or outside services.
- Stock, organize and order raw stock materials, tools and equipment for the shop floor.
- Design/build new fixture and shop fab projects.
- Create work orders for shop floor.
Demonstrates advanced knowledge of CNC machining, programming, tooling, setup, fixture design, and machining processes to consistently produce high-quality parts.
Blueprint & Print InterpretationAccurately interprets engineering drawings, specifications, and customer requirements to develop machining processes and cost estimates.
Estimating & Cost AnalysisAnalyzes customer prints, material requirements, machining time, tooling, and production methods to develop accurate and competitive job estimates and quotations.
Attention to DetailMaintains a high level of accuracy when programming, setting up equipment, inspecting parts, creating work orders, and developing estimates.
Problem Solving & TroubleshootingIdentifies machining, programming, tooling, and equipment issues and implements effective solutions to maintain quality and productivity.
Quality FocusEnsures parts meet customer specifications through inspection, process verification, and adherence to quality standards.
Organization & Inventory ManagementMaintains tooling, raw materials, fixtures, and machining supplies while ensuring adequate inventory levels and organized work areas.
Continuous ImprovementIdentifies opportunities to improve machining processes, reduce cycle times, improve profitability, and increase operational efficiency.
Communication & CollaborationWorks effectively with customers, engineering, production, and management to support quoting, scheduling, and manufacturing objectives.
Reliability & AccountabilityDemonstrates ownership of work, follows through on commitments, maintains dependable attendance, and ensures projects are completed accurately and on time.
Skills & QualificationsTo perform this job successfully, the individual should have knowledge of Edit NC software, CAD software, Surfcam and Microsoft Word.
