Job Title

Manages and provides leadership on all activities of a team (shift) of Spray Dry production personnel.

Advises, controls, and supports operations to guarantee compliance with the Production Schedule, Standard Operating Procedures, Good Manufacturing Practices, Regulatory Laws, and all company policies, and procedures. A general knowledge and understanding of production processes and excellent communication skills are essential to the successful fulfillment of the position requirements.

Essential Functions
  • Has primary responsibility for ensuring safe, environmentally responsible, and cost-effective production of material in the plant
  • Ensure compliance to the production schedule at all times
  • Determine efficient use of personnel, equipment, and supplies to achieve schedule
  • Work with quality assurance to follow all food safety policies
  • Monitor all production operations on a regular basis; take corrective action when deviations from specifications are apparent; report problems and corrective actions to operations staff in a timely manner; observe production processes for compliance with written SOPs
  • Communicate shift activities to Production Manager daily
  • Continuously audit personnel for compliance with policies and procedures
  • Maintain contact with Production Manager to plan staffing requirement
  • Practice good communication skills and promote team-based decision making whenever possible
  • Inform Maintenance Supervisor and Production Manager when major equipment repairs or supplies are needed
  • Prepare and submit work orders in a timely manner
  • Follow through with Maintenance Supervisor as to status of work orders
  • Participate in team meetings; attend training programs as advised by Management Staff; provide coaching and advisory support to team meetings; participate in team meetings as an active member
  • Performs and/or participates in supervisory duties such as: interviewing and selecting personnel, training and development, motivation, goal setting, evaluation, and corrective actions
  • Set quarterly goals/objectives with Production Manager
  • Prepare batching records and labels
  • Seek educational enrichment as part of your personal development process and inform manager of courses or seminars that support your objectives and maintain the ongoing effort of personal improvement
  • Use time management tools to effectively monitor your daily activities
  • Meet frequently with the Management Staff to discuss any questions or concerns you may have about your work, the company objectives, production performance, etc.
  • Comply with all policies and procedures of the Corporation
  • Follows and enforces all safety policies and procedures including use of safety equipment (PPE) and equipment safeguards; works to advance and promote the safety culture of the site
Requirements
  • A high school education is required and strong math, computer literacy, verbal and oral communication skills
  • Some college coursework is preferable
  • Three to five years of supervisory or group leader experience in a food plant environment is required
  • The candidate must possess the skills needed to plan, organize, direct and motivate people to ensure potential for further advancement through professional development
  • The position requires sufficient time to accomplish the tasks leading to long days, weekends, and holiday work schedules
  • When plant production is operational on weekends and holidays, the Shift Supervisor is expected to be available to work his/her appropriate shift
  • The ability to manage change and interruption is paramount to be a successful Shift Supervisor
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry-out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form
  • Must be able to work independently – to organize tasks and manage the workload
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several variables in standardized situations
  • Attain a second-class boiler license
Working Conditions
  • The job responsibilities require an extensive amount of walking while on the job
  • Continuous physical activity through the work day such as climbing, balancing, stooping, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, hearing, talking, repetitive motion and moving objects weighing up to 60 lbs.
  • The plant environment involves working in noisy, wet, slippery, and hot conditions
