Job Summary
The Nursing Assistant (NA) serves as a caregiver to residents during scheduled work periods in long‑term care. The NA delivers resident‑centered nursing care and daily living assistance under the supervision of a registered nurse (RN), following care plans, infection control policies, and PPE usage. Duties include bathing, toileting, grooming, dressing, recording vital signs, psychosocial support, transferring residents, providing range‑of‑motion exercises, preparing meals, and encouraging participation in recreational programs.
The NA assists nursing staff with procedures as needed, documents interactions, communicates changes in residents’ conditions to the charge nurse, and participates in departmental committees.
- Provide resident‑centered nursing care and daily assistance as directed by the RN.
- Follow infection prevention and control policies and PPE use.
- Assist residents with bathing, toileting, grooming, dressing, and vital sign monitoring.
- Support residents in transferring, repositioning, walking, and performing range‑of‑motion and passive exercises.
- Prepare food, serve meals, and encourage a positive dining experience.
- Assist with housekeeping, laundry, and maintaining residents’ living areas.
- Participate in wellness and recreational programs and document residents’ engagement.
- Assist with nursing procedures and document resident interactions and outcomes.
- Communicate changes in resident condition and care concerns to the charge nurse.
- Collect non‑invasive specimens and record vital signs.
- Maintain accurate documentation of care and compliance with departmental policies.
- Participate in departmental/organization committees and task forces as needed.
- High school graduate or GED preferred (not required).
- Minimum age of 16.
- Prior clinical or nursing assistant experience in long‑term care preferred.
- Required Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification with the state board of nursing or enrollment in a training program, to be obtained within four months of hire; certification training and testing are provided by the facility.
- Annual completion of department‑specific competency testing and maintenance of continuing education credits; minimum of 12 hours per year.
- Maintenance of all required department‑specific certifications.
- When applicable, certification and registration with the Unlicensed Assistive Person (UAP) Registry.
- Potential classification as a Sanford Category II Driver may require a valid driver’s license, vehicle report, and medical qualification for driving duties per Sanford Driving Policy.
