Unit OverviewThe clinical Nurse contributes to the creation of a compassionate and caring environment for patients, families and colleagues through displays of kindness and active listening. The 21-bed neurosciences unit provides level-1 care for patients with ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes, brain tumors, aneurysms, seizures, traumatic brain injuries, neuromuscular diseases and other neurologic diagnoses. Two patient beds require every-4-hour monitoring, and seven embedded Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU) beds are for seizure-disorder patients admitted electively while their anti-convulsant medications are held and hard-wired to continuous EEG.
This enables physicians to localize seizure activity and determine candidacy for brain-mapping or surgical removal of seizure-causing brain tissue. The nurse-to-patient ratio for floor patients is typically 1:5.
