The Director of Nursing works in close alignment with the Chief Clinical Officer (CNO) to ensure patient safety, quality of care and exceptional customer service across the continuum of care. This position is also a key partner on strategic planning, innovation, and identifies the needs of our communities and the patients being served. The Director of Nursing also has direct oversight over multiple nursing departments, as well as project management and operational support for the nursing division.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities Responsible for the Safety, Quality of Care, Service, Operational and Financial Performance of assigned areas, including regulatory compliance, compliance with the Minnesota Nurse Practice Act, delegation and scope of practice requirements, and emergency preparedness and downtime readiness.

Ensures nursing services maintain survey readiness, address regulatory findings and corrective actions, and sustain compliance through ongoing monitoring and evaluation.

Creates a work environment rooted in quality patient care and encourages collaborative and shared scope of work based upon the strengths of each leader within the division to achieve desired outcomes.

Works with clinical staff, including physicians, to standardize work processes and ensure evidenced practice, clinical standards, protocols, order sets, and nursing practices are consistent with applicable regulatory requirements and support safe, high-quality patient care.

Develops relationships between departments, administration, physicians, supervisors and direct staff to ensure collaboration and opportunities for shared services.

Assists with implementation of strategic initiatives and performance improvement activities following the TCAT process’ methodology.

Identifies opportunities for growth and development in programs and services to ensure seamless transitions in care and optimal outcomes across the continuum.

Develops, monitors, and analyzes budget and financial information and utilizes all resources in an effective and economical manner.

Provides customer experience, leadership and direction to help ensure movement toward top quartile results for HCAHPS and outpatient departments.

Ensures clinical support functions are coordinated across staff, functions and activities in order to improve patient and clinical outcomes. Removes barriers, engages front line staff in problem solving.

Works with department leaders to understand staffing models across areas of responsibilities to ensure best practice, quality of care and employee satisfaction. Supports and guides staffing based upon organizational fluctuations and collaborates with other departments to ensure staffing effectiveness, cross-training, and flexibility across the organization.

Supports managers and staff in professional growth and development. Includes them in decision making and improvement projects. Works to develop staff ownership in respective areas to complete assigned work and achieve consistent outcomes.

Holds self and staff accountable to evidenced based practice, patient safety, and quality of care with exceptional service to our customers. Monitors nursing-sensitive quality indicators and supports event reporting, root cause analysis, performance improvement and safety culture initiatives.

Ensures nursing staff competency is assessed, validated and maintained based upon role-specific requirements, including orientation, high-risk and low-volume skills, cross-training, simulation, emergency response, required certifications, and other clinical competencies.

Performs other duties as required or assigned.

Bachelors degree in nursing or related field.

Four years of progressive leadership experience in healthcare.

Equivalent education and experience is acceptable.

Active Registered Nursing license in the state of Minnesota.

Strong interpersonal, project management and relationship-building skills.

Ability to work independently and collaboratively with diverse stakeholders.

Ability to maintain confidential and sensitive information.

Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously, ensuring follow through and good judgment.

Ability to communicate effectively in both verbal and written forms.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, direct reports, providers, vendors, and community partners.
