The Perioperative Services Registered Nurse (RN) at Meeker Memorial Hospital provides comprehensive care to the patient and family along the perioperative continuum including but not limited to pre-op, intra-op. post-op; phase 1 and 2, special procedures - endoscopy, epidural steroid injections, and conscious sedation. This is achieved in a close-knit, fast-paced environment, ensuring patient safety and optimal outcomes throughout the entire surgical experience.

Preoperative Phase- Conducts comprehensive physical and psychological assessments, interviews patients and ensures all necessary lab work, documentation (like signed consents) and tests are completed and available.
- Educates patients and their families about the surgical process, recovery expectations and pain management, while also providing emotional support to help alleviate fears and anxiety.
- Prepares the operating room, ensuring all necessary instruments, supplies and equipment are sterile, functional and ready for the specific procedure.
- Manages the overall nursing care in the OR, acts as the patient's advocate, coordinates the surgical team's needs, manages the flow of supplies and maintains a sterile environment from outside the sterile field.
- Continuously monitors the patient's vital signs and condition, assists the anesthesia provider, and maintains accurate, real-time documentation of the procedure and patient status.
- Must be prepared to respond quickly and effectively to surgical emergencies or complications, often with minimal supervision, leveraging strong critical thinking skills.
- Cares for the patient as they recover from anesthesia, monitoring closely for complications such as hypoxia, pain, nausea or blood pressure fluctuations.
- Provides detailed postoperative instructions to patients and their families regarding wound care, medication and follow-up appointments to facilitate the smooth transition of care.
- Working knowledge of surgical instrumentation and equipment.
- Working knowledge of conscious sedation medications.
- Working knowledge of anesthetic agents and airway management.
- Working knowledge of cardiac rhythms and appropriate interventions
- Technical knowledge of cardiac monitors.
- Be proficient in all phases of perioperative care and potentially multiple surgical specialties (e.g., orthopedics, general surgery, endoscopies, etc.).
- Successfully demonstrates professional nursing skills, competencies and expected outcomes as required for a MMHC Registered Nurse.
- Practice sound Infection Control principles including aseptic technique.
- Be able to function independently in role of pre-admission patient screening, total joint teaching, operating room circulator, patient admission/discharge, recovery, sedation administration and PRN charge nurse.
- Be able to collaborate and communicate with a small, consistent team of surgeons, anesthesia provider and support staff.
- After 6 months of successful employment, may serve as the charge nurse and follow the unit goals and objectives to maintain high quality standards of care.
- Actively suggesting and participating in Quality Improvement measures for the Department.
- Assessing department activity levels and staff, accordingly, being available as a resource to staff and providers, observe for adherence to unit and hospital policies and procedures, direct smooth operation of daily surgery schedule.
