Description:

Fish and Wildlife Technician/Specialist will assist the Dept of Biology and Environment with environmental and natural resources management activities on the Grand Portage Reservation. Duties include fisheries assessments in streams, inland lakes, and Lake Superior and also wildlife research and management projects inland. These positions may also be responsible for assisting in the operation of the Grand Portage Native Fish Hatchery.

Additional natural resources work may include wild rice seeding and monitoring, wetland assessments and environmental monitoring.

Education:

A four-year degree (B.S.) in biology, natural resources or environmental science is required for consideration for a Specialist classification.

Qualifications:

Significant field experience using sampling equipment and vehicles such as snowmobiles, ATVs, canoes, GPS and motor boats is helpful. Computer word processing experience (Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint) and organizational skills are helpful. Fish and wildlife handling experience preferred. Applicants should be self-motivated, detail oriented, and demonstrate past employment or project productivity. Prior experience operating boats on Lake Superior or animal handling would be useful.

Knowledge of tribal sovereignty, treaty rights and Ojibwe culture is beneficial.

Grand Portage requires a background check and pre-employment drug and alcohol testing for all positions. American Indian Preference will apply.
