Soil Health Outreach​/District Technician

Nature Of Work

This position specialized in outreach and technical work providing assistance and information to landowners. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Land Management Director and SWCD Assistant Manager, in conjunction with the Watonwan Soil & Water Conservation District (SWCD) Board, and Board of County Commissioners.

This position promotes the efforts of the Watonwan County SWCD through a wide variety of promotional activities and media outlets. Additionally, this position develops content and prepares materials for all levels of media, field days, booths, and workshops, as well as attending events on behalf of the SWCD as it relates to programs and practices that are a priority within Watonwan County.

This position will provide technical assistance to landowners and perform other duties as assigned. May assist with reporting and administrative duties required of each program. Promotes growth of district conservation programming including building partnerships. Represents the Watonwan SWCD and Land Management office in a positive manner. Performs other work as required in assisting the Land Management Office, which handles implementation of the local and comprehensive water plans, wetland conservation act, zoning, septic systems, aquatic invasive species program, and feedlots.

Responsible to observe all Watonwan County safety and health rules and to apply the principles of accident prevention in day-to-day duties.

Training and Experience A minimum of two year degree is preferred in environmental or natural sciences, biology, agronomy, or a related field.

Experience with media, communications, and event planning is helpful. Previous experience with soil health programs and initiatives would be beneficial. Any combination of education and experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position will be considered. Requires a valid Minnesota Driver's License. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Self-motivated, with strong communication, written, verbal, organizational, and interpersonal skills. Ability to work with multiple advertising and all levels of media platforms. Ability to interpret and explain regulations, requirements and activities to individuals, officials and the general public and enforce regulatory provisions with firmness, tact and courtesy. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, representatives of other agencies and the general public.

Ability to work independently or with a group and under minimal supervision.

Comfortable with public speaking and engaging audiences. Strong understanding of proper seed mixtures needed for different soil and land conditions. Experience with seed drills. Knowledge in surface and groundwater protection and restoration. Conservation minded. Knowledge of agriculture and best management practices. Experience writing conservation plans and practice implementation. Familiarity with RIM, CRP, EQIP, and State Cost-Share. Knowledge of NRCS, DNR, BWSR and FSA programs.

Familiarity with ArcGIS, GPS, ATV/UTV, and ability to safely drive a truck. Ability to adjust daily schedule quickly if required. Requires proficient computer skills including use of Outlook, Word and Excel. Ability to perform semi-active field work under a variety of weather conditions. Physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs in addition to sitting, standing, walking, climbing, bending, stooping, crouching, exert force and perform other bodily movements to sufficiently perform inspections and operate field equipment.
