Overview

Naval Electronic Sensor Operators operate radar and radio detection devices, radar jamming systems and decoys, and gun/missile-firing equipment carried on major naval warships. As members of the ship’s Combat Team, they detect, locate, and identify friendly and enemy submarines, ships, and aircraft. They support the defence of their ship from all threats.

Responsibilities
  • Locate and identify unknown radars
  • Listen to communications from submarines, ships, aircraft, and shore bases
  • Operate gun and missile-firing equipment used to defend the ship
  • Conduct intelligence and evidence gathering
Work Environment

Naval Electronic Sensor Operators work primarily in the ship’s Operations Room, operating advanced warfare equipment y also perform shipboard duties such as sentry, lookout, line handling during replenishment at sea, and ship hand for harbor operations. Operators participate in search and rescue events, person-overboard emergencies, and serve on the ship’s emergency response and fire attack teams. They provide damage control during hull breaches and, if required, serve as members of the naval boarding party.

Career

Path

Choosing a career in the Regular Force leads to assignment to a base after training, with possible relocations. The Primary Reserve Force allows part‑time service within a Reserve unit, typically working one night per week and weekends, with opportunities for full‑time employment.

Qualifications

No prior work experience or related career skills are required. CAF recruiters assess the applicant’s interests and attributes to determine suitability.

Education

The minimum education required to apply is completion of provincial Grade 10 or Secondary 4 (Quebec).
