This position implements, evaluates, and reports on fisheries management activities in the Grand Marais management area, which includes over 750 lakes and 1,200 miles of trout streams within the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.

• Assist with planning, implementation, and reporting of lake and stream investigations.
• Assist with angler creel and recreational use surveys, compile and analyze results, and present data in written reports.
• Assist with fish propagation and distribution programs to meet stocking objectives.
• Protect and improve fish and aquatic habitat in public waters.
• Assist with special fish management projects to improve angling opportunities.
• Maintain and promote public relations to inform clienteles on fisheries programs.
• Assist with maintenance of equipment and facilities, and ensure proper recordkeeping.
• Follow established safety procedures to reduce injuries and equipment damage.

• Bachelor's Degree in biology, fisheries, fish & wildlife, or a closely associated area.
• Transcripts showing completion of required coursework.
• Ability to maintain and safely operate equipment such as boats, motors, trailers, etc.
• Knowledge of fish sampling equipment, techniques, and principles of Fisheries Management and Ecology.
• Writing and communication skills sufficient for drafting professional management plans, technical reports, letters, and correspondence.
• Computer literacy, including database, spreadsheet, and word processing skills.

Transcript requirements:

• Fisheries and aquatic sciences courses: minimum 4 courses (12 semester or 18 quarter hours), at least 2 directly related to fisheries science, and at least 1 covering principles of fisheries science and management.
• Other biological sciences courses adding to 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours.
• Physical sciences courses: 15 semester or 23 quarter hours.
• Mathematics and statistics courses: 6 semester or 9 quarter hours (including college algebra and statistics).
• Communications courses: 9 semester or 13 quarter hours.
• Credit requires letter grades of C- or higher.
• Certification by the American Fisheries Society as an Associate Fisheries Professional or Certified Fisheries Professional is accepted in lieu of required coursework.

• One year of directed field fisheries experience using standard sampling gear and methodology.
• Public relations and presentation skills for diverse stakeholder groups.
• Experience with fish culture, handling, transport, and stocking of recreational species.
• Experience conducting special investigations such as angler creel surveys or mark‑recapture experiments.
• Experience conducting stream surveys and habitat enhancement analysis.
• Experience working in remote, wilderness, or backcountry settings.
• Knowledge of remote sensing, GPS, and GIS applications.
• Experience in managing large databases, statistical analyses, data compilation, and report development.
• Lead work experience.

• Unrestricted Class D Driver’s license with a clear driving record; minimum age 18 for operating equipment.
• Ability to meet physical requirements and work in environmental conditions of the position with or without reasonable accommodations.
