UMN Morris Community Service Officer (Temporary)

Location:

Morris, MN. This position is a temporary, full/part‑time civil service role. The primary responsibility is monitoring and enforcing parking on University of Minnesota Morris streets and lots.

• Patrol streets and parking lots on foot and by vehicle (15%).
• Identify and write citations for violations of parking ordinances, such as vehicles in no‑parking zones, 20‑minute zones, and vehicles without permits in permit areas (20%).
• Initiate procedures to have slofflaw vehicles towed or booted, call in bootable vehicles, and check parking signs for proper signage, reporting vandalized or missing signs (5%).
• Attend scheduled hearings in court as requested or required by the City Attorney, and maintain accurate records and reports manually or through automated methods (15%).
• Assist large crowds by helping drivers find parking (5%).
• Act as a security monitor for campus operations: tour assigned areas during evening and night hours, inspect buildings and grounds for irregularities such as potential fire hazards, water or gas leaks, and unauthorized persons; close doors and windows left open, turn off lights inadvertently left on (20%).
• Perform special security‑related duties as assigned (5%).
• Assist the college community, Police Department, Fire Department, and Ambulance Service with emergency situations (10%).
• Handle money on a daily basis (5%).
• Communicate effectively with diverse ethnic and socioeconomic groups in a wide variety of situations.

• High school graduation and a valid Minnesota driver’s license.
• Proficient driving skills.
• Effective written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to exercise initiative and sound judgment, reacting with discretion under varying conditions.
• Ability to withstand verbal confrontation from the public and remain courteous and tactful to violators.
• Ability to read and understand signs.
• Ability to write legibly and accurately record information.
• Ability to complete work assignments, take and understand directives.
• Ability to communicate effectively with diverse ethnic and socioeconomic groups.

Work will be outdoors each day in all weather conditions at a fixed post or roving post. Must walk for long periods, stand for at least eight (8) hours per shift, carry 10–15 pounds continuously, lift 10–20 pounds regularly, and move 30–50+ pounds occasionally. Good near and distant vision, ability to distinguish basic colors, and hearing conversational voices are required. The officer must wear a uniform and pass a pre‑employment physical and background check.

Pay Range: $21.80 per hour, depending on education, qualifications, and experience. Retirement plan options are available for Civil Service, Faculty, Labor‑Represented, Professional & Administrative, and Temp Casual classifications.
