The Directional Drill Locator is responsible for tracking and guiding the directional drill head during horizontal directional drilling (HDD) operations for telecommunications projects. This role works closely with the Drill Operator to ensure accurate bore paths, proper depth, and safe installation of underground fiber optic and conduit systems while avoiding existing utilities.
Key Responsibilities
- Track the drill head using electronic locating equipment (Falcon, Digi Trak, Subsite, etc.)
- Communicate real-time depth, pitch, roll, and direction to the Drill Operator
- Read and interpret utility locates, bore plans, and construction drawings
- Maintain proper bore depth and alignment to safely cross roads, sidewalks, and utilities
- Assist with bore planning and entry/exit point setup
- Verify utility locates and assist with potholing as needed
- Ensure compliance with damage prevention, OSHA, and company safety policies
- Assist with reaming, pullback, cleanup, and site restoration
- Complete daily production reports and job documentation
- Work outdoors in varying weather and site conditions
- 1+ year of directional drill locating experience (telecom or utility preferred)
- Experience locating for fiber optic conduit and underground telecom infrastructure
- Proficiency with locating systems (Digi Trak, Falcon, Subsite, or similar)
- Strong understanding of underground utility locating and damage prevention
- Ability to read prints, bore profiles, and utility maps
- Valid driver's license required; CDL preferred but not required
- Ability to lift 75-100 lbs and perform physical labor
- Willingness to work overtime, weekends, and travel as needed
- OSHA 10 or OSHA 30
- HDD Locator certification (Digi Trak or equivalent)
- First Aid / CPR
- Trenching & Excavation certification (a plus)
- Outdoor construction environment
- Exposure to dirt, dust, noise, and weather extremes
- Work performed around heavy equipment and live utilities
