Knife River Heavy Equipment Mechanic
Mechanic repairs and maintains trucks, bulldozers, scrapers, wheel and track loaders, trench diggers, asphalt equipment as well as any other type of machinery that may be brought in for maintenance and/or repairs.
Typical schedule is Monday - Friday 6:00 AM - 6:00 PM with one Saturday per month. Schedule may vary due to weather and customer demand.
- 4+ years' experience working on heavy equipment and construction type vehicles both diesel and gasoline.
- Ability to hold and maintain proper licensure and acceptable driving record.
- GED and/or equivalent combination of experience.
- Ability to work flexible shifts, including overtime, possible nights and some Saturday.
- CDL and endorsements related to the mechanic and transport field
- Current medical card.
- Mechanic Certifications from an accredited program.
- Light welding experience.
- Utilize manuals, hand tools & power tools.
- Utilize online computer research and diagnostics resource tools.
- Extensive knowledge of electrical power, transmissions, brake, hydraulic and other equipment systems.
- Ability to read job orders, observe and listen to equipment in operation to determine system malfunctions.
- Repair cylinders, elevator chains, undercarriages, planetaries, recharges and replaces batteries, transmissions, torque converters, planetaries and hydraulic pumps using mechanic hand tools, welding equipment, standard charts and hoists.
- Examine and replace protective guards, loose bolts and specific safety devices on heavy equipment as needed.
- Lubricates moving parts and drives repaired truck or equipment to verify conformance to specifications.
- Completes appropriate paperwork to support preventative maintenance and repair activities.
- Ensure MSHA, OSHA, EPA, DNR, safety and environmental regulation compliance.
- Always work safely and take action to prevent any and all unsafe actions, processes, and behaviors.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Extensive knowledge and experience with all types of gasoline and diesel construction equipment and vehicles.
- Ability to safely use hand tools and equipment.
- Must be able to troubleshoot and problem solve.
- Independently working to assess and repair equipment appropriately.

As a Diesel Mechanic – Experienced, you'll use your skills to perform maintenance and repairs of complex equipment with limited or no supervision in a highly skilled, safe, and professional manner.
What You'll Do- Maintenance and repair of complex mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and diesel systems on a variety of rental and customer equipment and tools.
- When required, travel to customer job sites for repair/maintenance of rental or customer owned equipment; must maintain service vehicle in a clean and professional manner.
- Assist in the training of lower level technicians as needed.
- Maintain paperwork/electronic documentation of work performed (work orders) in a complete and timely manner on a daily basis.
- Assist with pick-up and delivery of equipment & parts.
- Other duties assigned as needed.
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record.
- 5+ years of experience repairing/maintaining equipment and tools.
- Advanced mechanical aptitude and working knowledge of tools.
- Extensive knowledge of construction equipment with an advanced understanding of schematics and diagrams.
- Must own tools applicable to position.
- Superior customer service, teamwork and verbal/written communication skills.
- Ability to frequently lift items up to 45 lbs.
