Fleet Technician Welder

Hennepin County's Public Works Administration department is hiring a Fleet Technician Welder to join the Fleet Services Maintenance division. This position will be responsible for fabricating, repairing, and modifying a wide variety of county equipment. This includes welding, cutting, and shaping metals for trucks, trailers, snowplows, hydraulic systems, guardrails, bridges, and other essential Public Works assets. This position will use MIG (Metal Inert Gas), stick, TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas) and acetylene welding equipment, operate fabrication tools, read and interpret blueprints, and perform mechanical repairs as needed to support reliable and safe county operations.

This position is located at the Public Works Facility, 1600 Prairie Drive, Medina, Minnesota 55340. There is no public transportation to this facility. This is a first shift position, with work hours being 6:00 a.m-2:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. This position requires candidates to be available for on call duty after hours, weekends, and holidays. New Employee Orientation (NEO) for all new benefit-earning employees is in-person in downtown Minneapolis.

This is a full-time, benefit earning position. This position is internally classified as a Fleet Technician, Welder. In addition to the base wage, there is a $.50/hour for a class A driver's license, $2.80/hour for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) master's in automotive or heavy truck, and $1.10 for the night shift differential pay.

In this position, you will:

  • Perform welding on various metals by using various welders, cutting torches, shop tools and equipment.
  • Perform straightening, shaping, brazing, tempering, cutting and welding varied metals in repair and fabrication tasks for trucks, snowplows, sanders, trailer hitches, tanks, under-body scrapers, hydraulic systems, signposts, guard rails and bridges.
  • Read and interpret drawing and prints; estimate time and labor charges.
  • Order and maintain stock welding supplies.
  • Perform repairs from an aerial bucket, snooper, bridges, platforms, and confined spaces.
  • Perform commercial vehicle inspections.
  • Perform light mechanical repair on fleet equipment as needed.

Need to have:

  • Two or more years of journey level welder experience.
  • A valid driver's license and the ability to obtain a Hennepin County driver's permit and a valid Class B driver's license or ability to obtain within six months of employment.
  • Ability to: lift objects weighing up to 50 pounds with or without reasonable accommodation. Supply own full complement of mechanic tools.

Nice to have:

  • Valid Class A or B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with tanker endorsements.
  • American Welding Society (AWS) welding certifications.
  • Knowledge of metals and alloys and standard shop procedures and techniques used in welding, cutting, brazing, heating and shaping.
  • Ability to work under limited supervision. Work from rough sketches, drawings, blueprints, verbal and written instructions. Make estimates of time and materials and maintain routine records. Supply own full complement of mechanic tools. Lift objects up to 70 pounds with or without reasonable accommodations.

Fleet Services provides county departments with vehicles and equipment, including cars, trucks, vans, boats, trailers, on-road equipment, and off-road equipment for conducting official county business. Fleet Services supports 6 Business Lines, 20 departments.   • Maintenance and repair of 1,200 county vehicles and equipment.
  • Providing vehicles and equipment for customers including those with only occasional needs through our fleet motor pool available throughout various Hennepin County facilities.
  • Asset management, budgeting, and reporting; this includes vehicle and equipment replacement, scheduling, forecasting and specific analytics such as fuel usage, vehicle location, driving habits, etc.
  • Fuel management, fuel system management, consumables tracking and reporting.
  • Specification development for procurement of vehicles and equipment with customer involvement to provide the most cost effective, reliable, and sustainable vehicle and/or equipment for their operations.
