Utilities Maintenance Worker
The Utilities Maintenance Worker performs a variety of manual labor tasks and operates light and heavy equipment to ensure the proper maintenance and functionality of the City's utility systems, City structures, and essential HVAC systems.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Maintains and repairs storm sewer, sanitary sewer and water systems.
- Conducts routine maintenance of manholes and sewer lines and ability to operate a sewer combination truck.
- Conducts routine maintenance of water valves to ensure proper grade and performs water main and hydrant flushing and valve exercising.
- Prepares and monitors field markings for Gopher State locates; performs visual inspection of residential sewer and water hook-ups; ensures proper tests have been conducted by contractors.
- Monitors all wells, towers, lift stations (daily), and SCADA systems. Repairs and maintains pumps, motors, and related equipment used in wastewater lift stations and water systems, such as water hydrants and water towers to optimize performance of water & wastewater systems.
- Reads, exchanges, and performs minor repairs to water meters in the field; prepares meter reading routes. Installs and programs automated read-out equipment.
- Follows all safety rules and procedures as outlined in the employee safety manual, OSHA laws, and other applicable rules and regulations; performs and documents safety inspections on public works equipment, buildings, and utilities.
- Assists the Street Division when needed, which includes sanding, salting, and snow removal from city streets, public works properties, parking lots, and sidewalks.
- Assists the Parks Division when needed for playground assembly, tree planting, etc.
- Responsible for working overtime, shift changes, and emergency callouts.
- Assists in maintenance of all City HVAC systems.
- Occasionally responsible for training and directing work of seasonal employees assigned to the Utilities Division.
- Performs other duties as assigned or apparent.

Required Knowledge and Abilities
- Knowledge of methods and materials; ability to use heavy equipment, light equipment, and the hand tools used to repair and maintain storm sewers, sanitary sewers and water systems.
- Ability to review and interpret new development utility plans or other plans related to municipal utility systems.
- Ability to communicate in a courteous manner, both orally and in written form to co-workers, supervisors, and the public.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with co-workers, supervisors, and the public.
- Ability to compute rates, ratios, and percentages using whole numbers and percentages.
- Ability to take initiative and exercise good judgment in the field and with co-workers.
- Ability to work in adverse weather conditions and confined spaces.
- Basic mechanical skills sufficient to build and/or repair various items such as hydrants, meters, and fan systems.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams) and common database applications.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to effectively convey information and ideas to colleagues, supervisors, and the public.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to establish and maintain positive and productive working relationships with supervisors, colleagues, and members of the public.
Minimum Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Valid Minnesota Class A Commercial Driver's License with air brake and tanker endorsements; satisfactory driving record - must meet Federal D.O.T. regulations
- Class D Waste Water Collection System Worker Certificate upon application, or ability to obtain in one year.
- Class D Water Supply Operator's Certificate upon application, or ability to obtain within one year.
Preferred Qualifications
- Class S-C Waste Water Collection Systems Workers Certificate.
- Class C Water Supply System Operator's Certificate.
- Two years' experience in plumbing, pipe fitting, or HVAC systems.
