Position Summary
The Social Worker in the Human Services Department’s Child Protection/Intake/Assessments Unit focuses on child protection, children’s services and family assessment duties to support the safety and wellbeing of children and families in the community. The role includes eligibility determination, assessments, case management, crisis response, and collaboration with multidisciplinary teams.
Responsibilities- Assess clients to determine needs and establish treatment/service goals.
- Maintain caseload and provide ongoing case management, including crisis management.
- Effectively interview and engage clients to assess and evaluate needs, counsel clients, conduct field visits, explain policies, and provide immediate crisis response.
- Develop, complete assessments and documentation (social histories, home assessments, service plans) and determine eligibility for county, state, and federal programs.
- Manage individual clients or families, explore, identify, resolve, prevent, or control problems.
- Complete required paperwork and documentation according to mandated timelines, maintain case records per federal, state, and local guidelines.
- Attend court hearings as required and update client information (SSIS).
- Generate case plans and assessments outlining client needs and expectations.
- Interpret policies and regulations to clients.
- Provide casework services for rehabilitation and care of clients.
- Facilitate access to information, refer to community services, and follow through with treatment/service plans.
- Monitor progress toward goals and objectives, perform intake, and handle on‑call responsibilities on a rotating basis.
- Complete other duties as assigned.
- Maintain accurate client records in the computer system and submit reports.
- Prepare and maintain progress notes, narrative summaries, reports, and required case documentation.
- Collaborate and consult with multidisciplinary and multi‑agency teams.
- Attend continuing education and in‑service training; maintain knowledge of best practices.
- Work closely with law enforcement and county attorney staff on court cases; consult with other agency units when services overlap.
- Attend and participate in unit and agency meetings; provide community education and other duties as assigned.
- Participate in social services on‑call systems and provide crisis interventions during non‑office hours.
- Maintain a paperless system for record keeping and perform other duties as assigned or apparent.
- Provide professional services for assessments, evaluations, and implementation of child protection service plans.
- Communicate with law enforcement, mental health, school, medical, and court professionals.
- Ensure immediate safety and wellbeing of children; review alleged cases and screen for maltreatment guidelines.
- Manage safety planning, placement of children outside the home, direct care, supervise visits, and transport clients and children.
- Complete relative searches and manage the PSOP to assist at‑risk clients with resources.
- Locate and support adoptive parents; advise and consult with case managers on permanency issues.
- Support parents through post‑court report; complete parent home studies and supervise placement.
- Complete required permanency paperwork and Northstar Adoption or Kinship Assistance paperwork.
- Maintain safety, permanency, and wellbeing of children; take reports over the phone and write up intake reports.
- Check MGA, Maxis, and SSIS for histories; take BHF and commitment requests; write up mental health intakes.
- Screen reports, cross‑report to law enforcement, send mandated reporter letters, and provide community resources.
- Case manage voluntary and civilly committed clients; coordinate services with mental health, housing, medical, and educational providers.
- Monitor client compliance with court orders; create strategies to improve attendance; make referrals and coordinate services.
- Serve on commitment screening team; provide crisis intervention for suicidal clients; research placement options.
