Camp Lifeguard (Security)

Overview

Day Camp Ihduhapi in Loretto, MN is seeking enthusiastic and responsible Camp Lifeguards, age 16+, to lead groups of campers through aquatic activities such as swimming, canoeing, kayaking, paddle boarding, and more at Day Camp and Overnight Camp. This position is seasonal (June 8 – September 4, Monday–Friday, with some required staff training June 1–5). Pay rate is $17.00 per hour. The ideal candidate enjoys working outdoors and with kids.

Preference will be given to candidates with experience who can work through the end of the summer and attend all staff training. The YMCA may help coordinate necessary certifications, but lifeguard certification is required before performing duties. A variety of bus stop locations are available with an option for staff to be paid to ride the bus. Bus locations include:
Plymouth, Maple Grove, and St. Louis Park.

Responsibilities
  • Supervise the aquatics area to prevent accidents, assist swimmers, and respond to emergencies, creating a safe, enjoyable, and positive atmosphere in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.
  • Oversee and facilitate multiple activities including swimming and boating.
  • Actively supervise swimming activities in various settings including waterfront and/or pool; maintain constant surveillance and know emergency procedures.
  • Know, understand, and communicate policies and guidelines for the pool, body of water, or aquatic features; ensure that secondary job responsibilities do not interfere with active supervision.
  • Perform opening and closing procedures daily to meet state and local requirements.
  • Supervise watercraft activities (canoeing, kayaking, paddle boarding, sailing, motor boating) and communicate aquatic policies during these activities.
  • Respond to emergencies and non-emergencies; provide proper watercraft instruction to participants and camp counselors as needed.
  • Be a role model in attitude and behavior; uphold safety and security rules and procedures; promote camp procedures, sanitation, schedule, and sportsmanship.
  • Ensure aquatic program areas are clean, organized, and free of litter; maintain current certifications and trainings as required, including Lifeguarding and Oxygen Administration.
  • Attend scheduled in-service trainings and site/activity-specific trainings; support camp outside of aquatic programming when needed; perform first aid and complete incident reports as necessary.
  • Respond to camp emergency action plans and understand all emergency procedures; participate as a leader during emergencies.
  • Fill in for camp counselors when needed; support camp check-in and check-out processes.
  • Relationships

    This position reports to the Program Director, who reports to the Senior Program Director or Executive Director. The incumbent may take direction from a Camp Manager or Assistant Camp Director and interacts with camp staff, campers, volunteers, families, and diverse communities.

    Qualifications
    • Minimum age 16.
    • Current nationally accredited lifeguard certification (applicable to the body of water being guarded). The YMCA may help coordinate certification, but it must be completed before performing lifeguard duties.
    • Certification required within 45 days of hire:
      Oxygen Administration.
    • Physically capable of performing all lifeguard skills; ability to learn basic watercraft skills (carrying and paddling).
    • Ability to hear noises and distress signals in aquatic environments with or without reasonable accommodations.
    • Ability to see and observe all sections of the assigned zone with or without reasonable accommodations.
    • Demonstrated ability to recognize swimmers and paddlers needing assistance; respond and remedy unsafe situations.
    • Ability to communicate with all ages and levels of swimmers; work with diverse populations.
    • Dedicated to member safety and YMCA mission and philosophy.
    Work Conditions
    • Ability to pass lifeguard water test.
    • Must be able to remain alert in environments with temperatures up to 90 degrees or higher.
    • Must be able to sit or stand for extended periods.
    • Ability to perceive, identify, and respond to signs of distress; react calmly and effectively in hazardous situations.
    • Observe all areas of the water with clear vision; perform rescues and survival skills; undertake strenuous physical tasks required for water rescues (including swimming long distances and moving heavy loads).
    • Communicate verbally and project voice across distances in normal and loud situations.
    • Concentrate for extended periods as needed.
