Dakota County is seeking a motivated individual to fill part‑time and/or full‑time temporary Fleet position. This is an entry‑level position to perform a variety of semi‑skilled to skilled tasks in the repair of autos, trucks, and equipment. Work is performed under direct supervision of Fleet Management staff.
Although temporary, it is a GREAT opportunity to gain direct work experience on a variety of vehicles and equipment in a nationally recognized fleet department. We are seeking applicants that are currently enrolled in a Fleet or Heavy Equipment Technical Program and may have some work experience in the automotive or fleet industry. Work is performed at the Dakota County Maintenance Facility in Empire/Rosemount, MN.
The department is willing to work part‑time hours around a school schedule and allow the trainee to work full‑time hours during breaks and the summer months. Dakota County has a history of successful hiring temporary fleet techs into permanent positions when positions have become available.
Minimum Qualifications- Enrollment in a college or technical school in a Heavy Equipment, Automotive Repair, Fleet Maintenance, or a closely related degree program.
OR
- 3 months of direct work experience maintaining vehicles, trucks, or equipment.
AND
- Valid driver's license.
- Direct work experience as a Fleet Technician/Mechanic.
Pursuant to Dakota County Policy and Procedures Manual Section 3102 (L), this position is designated as Safety Sensitive.
Duties & ResponsibilitiesThese examples do not include all possible tasks in this work and do not limit the assignment of related tasks in any position of this classification. Regular attendance according to the position's management approved work schedule is required for all positions.
- Performs repairs and preventive maintenance service on vehicles and equipment.
- Maintains and records supplies and materials used on each vehicle or piece of equipment repaired or serviced.
- Operates equipment.
- Clean vehicles and equipment.
- Pick up parts and supplies.
- Performs other maintenance tasks as apparent, necessary or assigned.
- Ability to effectively follow directions.
- Ability to effectively communicate professionally both orally and in writing.
- Ability to comprehend and make decisions based on written materials and verbal instructions.
- Ability to exercise initiative, discretion, trust and independent judgment.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with co‑workers.
- Ability to operate various types of light equipment.
- Ability to perform strenuous work on a daily basis requiring physical strength and coordination.
- Basic knowledge of operation principles of gasoline and diesel engines, hybrid, electric and alternative fuel systems and of the mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, snow equipment, and computer systems of various types of vehicle and equipment.
- Ability to comprehend new and emerging technologies and apply this knowledge to repair procedures.
- Skill in the use of electric, air and hand tools and computerized testing equipment.
- Ability to demonstrate good detail orientation and logical thinking with organizational and prioritization skills.
- Ability to organize work efficiently and effectively and to handle multiple tasks and adapt to frequently changing work demands.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Must be able to perform the following in a complex ever changing work environment, on a daily basis. The posture and movement requirement for this position are: twisting, reaching forward, pushing and pulling on a continuous basis; walking, bending/stooping, climbing stairs, balancing, and reaching overhead or low levels on a frequent basis; sitting, standing, crouching, and working at low levels on an occasional basis.
