General Summary

The Bus Aide assists in the safe and efficient transportation of students to and from school.

Essential Functions
  • Ensures the safety and well-being of students being transported to and from school, on field trips, and extracurricular activities, etc. on vehicles used by the Mora School District, including but not limited to:
    • Helping students board the bus safely, including helping teachers prepare for departure (putting on coats and assuring that each child has his/her own belongings);
    • Assisting students board the correct bus;
    • Assuring that the bus driver is not distracted from the safe operation of the vehicle;
    • Helping students safely get off the bus and into the custody (only) of those individuals authorized to receive them; and
    • Retrieving any fallen objects during the bus ride.
  • Follows and ensures mandated child restraint device procedures, ensuring children are properly positioned and secured.
  • Engages in activity that is:
    • Safe and appropriate for a moving vehicle;
    • Consistent with Developmentally Appropriate Practices to make the trip pleasant and comfortable.
  • In the event of an accident or emergency, assures the safe evacuation of student and adult passengers (following the Bus Evacuation Plan) and assists in assuring that all passengers are transported to the nearest hospital or to their private physician, as per Medical/Accident Emergency Plan.
  • Assists in completing accident reports, when appropriate.
  • Reports any traffic violations incurred by the Bus Driver to the Transportation Assistant or Director.
  • Attends all scheduled staff meetings, team meetings, and training as requested.
  • Supervises sign‑in and sign‑out procedures.
  • Gives parents any notes or written materials sent from school staff and distributes notes from parents to the appropriate school staff.
  • Receives student's medicines from parents and returns them to parents.
  • Assists in maintaining the interior of the vehicle in a clean and safe operating condition.
  • Ensures that no student is ever left unsupervised on a bus.
  • Performs other duties, as may be assigned.

Recommended Employment Qualifications

Must be 18 years of age or older.

Must be able to pass a background check. Must be able to assist children using patience and verbal direction. Must be able to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, school personnel and the general public. Must have good verbal communication skills and visual ability to observe and interact appropriately with students. Ability to fulfill responsibilities under pressure, including during emergencies.

Education and Experience

High School Diploma or GED is required. Experience working with students in a school setting or as a bus aide is preferred. Verbal de‑escalation skills/training is also preferred.

Working Conditions

This physical requirements include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Frequent exertion of up to 10 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 25 pounds of force;
  • Frequent sitting and lifting;
  • Frequently requires use of arms and hands to reach, handle, grasp, carry or feel;
  • Frequently requires climbing up and down bus steps and walking;
  • Work requires distance vision, depth perception, night vision and peripheral vision;
  • Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly;
  • Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound;
  • Regularly exposure to outdoor weather conditions and occasionally requires exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to blood borne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment and exposure to bodily fluids;
  • Daily exposure to loud noise (e.g. on a school bus, traffic).
  • Daily risk involved with travel on main highways, side streets and rural roads during the transportation of students.
