Transportation Generalist Responsibilities
  • Maintain and reconstruct roadways, traffic barriers, guardrail repair, and roadside maintenance.
  • Participate in bituminous road repair, culvert cleaning, pipe restoration, and roadway vegetation management.
  • Perform preventive maintenance on highway equipment; operate tractor mowers, small rollers, and snow‑plow equipment.
  • Remove objects from roadways, conduct high‑volume traffic control, and respond to accidents, spill cleanup, rut repair, dead‑deer removal, etc.
  • Conduct landscaping duties (tree limb chipping, stump removal/grinding) and rest‑area maintenance (grounds pruning, vegetation control, parking surface repairs).
  • Assist with snow and ice control: remove snow, apply anti‑icing/dé‑icing chemicals, remove frozen ice and culvert materials, patrol at night or dawn, inspect winter equipment, cut edges, and sand.
Transportation Associate Responsibilities (Trainee)
  • Learn road surface maintenance and snow/ice control activities to keep roadways and roadsides safe, clear, and in good repair.
  • Assist senior crew in performing maintenance tasks per MnDOT standards.
  • Be able to report promptly within one hour of a call; maintain immediate phone access for emergencies and snow/ice events.
  • Adapt to various shifts (day, evening, overnight, weekend) and overtime as required.
Shift Differential

Employees working shifts that begin before 6:00 AM or end at or after 6:00 PM receive an additional $2.25 per hour for all hours worked outside those core times. The differential does not apply during paid leave. Employees who request and are approved to work before 6:00 AM or after 6:00 PM are not eligible for the shift differential.

Night Maintenance Premium Pay

Employees working night shifts lasting three (3) months or more receive $2.00 per hour for all shifts that start between 7:00 PM and 12:00 AM. This premium is in addition to the employee's hourly rate and any shift differential.

Minimum Qualifications
Transportation Generalist
  • Valid Class A or B CDL (no air‑brake restriction) + tanker endorsement (CDL type A or B must be listed on resume).
  • One year of experience in snow and ice, soils, road surface maintenance, roadside maintenance, bridge maintenance, signs, or related activities (roadway maintenance, commercial vehicle driving, commercial landscaping, heavy‑equipment operation or farm experience).
  • OR a completion of a Heavy Equipment Operation & Maintenance Program (at least 60 semester credits or 90 quarter credits) substitutes for one year of experience (transcripts required).
  • Working knowledge of English sufficient to read, write, speak, and understand oral and written information; communicate with employees and the general public; maintain routine written logs and simple records.
Transportation Associate
  • Valid Class A or B CDL (no air‑brake restriction) + tanker endorsement (must be listed on resume).
  • Working knowledge of English sufficient to read, write, speak, and understand oral and written information; communicate with employees and the public; maintain routine written logs and simple records.
