Description

Hennepin County's Transportation Project Delivery – Bridge Division is seeking one permanent, year-round Highway Maintenance Operator. The position will be responsible for preserving and maintaining the county's bridge inventory through a routine bridge maintenance program to ensure safe and convenient use of the county's highway system by the traveling public. This position includes bridge maintenance activities, bridge preservation by flushing, bridge deck crack sealing, concrete bridge repairs, tree and brush removal, retaining wall maintenance, assist the bridge inspection program, and snow and ice removal during the winter season.

$63,329.84 - $80,192.41 Annually

Current Hennepin County employees who refer a candidate hired into an open competitive position may be eligible for a $500 referral bonus.

This position will be located at the Public Works Facility at 1600 Prairie Drive, Medina, Minnesota, 55340. Work hours for the summer are 6 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. 4 days a week, and work hours for the winter are 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Overtime will be required occasionally during summer/winter operations. Availability to work various shifts is required including days, evenings, overnights, holidays, and weekend hours.

New Employee Orientation (NEO) for all new benefit-earning employees is in-person in downtown Minneapolis. Details about NEO will be provided upon hire. This is a full-time, benefit-earning position.

In this position, you will:
  • Perform routine bridge maintenance, annual bridge flushing, retaining wall maintenance, and various bridge repairs.
  • Operate a variety of equipment needed for bridge maintenance, bridge preservation, and bridge inspection programs.
  • Work with traffic control for work zones; layout of traffic control signs, coning in the work zone, and flagging operations following the Minnesota Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) field manual.
  • Operate designated ice and snow control equipment including snowplows.
  • Assist the bridge inspection program.
Need to have:
  • One or more years of experience in one of the following:
    • Road construction and/or road maintenance.
    • Operation of a commercial motor vehicle over 26,000 pounds gross vehicle weight (GVW).
    • Operation and maintenance of farm equipment.
    • Building and heavy construction industry.
  • Valid Class B driver's license with air brake endorsement. A valid Class A driver's license with a fifth wheel hitch qualification, air brake, and tanker endorsements must be obtained within one year of employment.
  • A valid driver's license and ability to obtain a Hennepin County driver's permit.
  • Ability to lift up to 70 pounds with or without reasonable accommodation.
Nice to have:
  • Completion of a training program in heavy equipment operation and/or highway maintenance.
  • Experience:
    • Working in a government public works agency.
    • Working as part of a team or work group.
    • Operating a snowplow.
  • Knowledge of:
    • Safe operation of equipment used in roadway maintenance.
    • Safe and proper use of various hand and power tools.
  • Ability to:
    • Follow verbal and written directions.
    • Perform heavy manual labor for extended periods of time in all types of weather conditions.
    • Make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment in the field.
    • Interact effectively and tactfully with the public, supervisors, and peers.
