Below are examples of typical work for both the Transportation Associate and Transportation Generalist roles. The actual day-to-day work will be assigned based on projects or immediate needs.
Summer Tasks- Maintain and reconstruct roadways, right-of-ways, roadway shoulders with gravel, bituminous, and concrete road surfaces; maintain traffic barriers; participate in bituminous road repair, culvert cleaning, and guardrail repair; maintain roadsides; install catch basins; place and remove Adopt-A-Highway bags; perform drainage and shoulder repair.
- Perform preventive maintenance on highway equipment and operate all tractor mowers and small rollers for maintaining roadways.
- Perform traffic control set-ups in high volume traffic in accordance with Temporary Traffic Zone Layouts field manual.
- Perform landscaping duties, including maintenance of trees, grass, shrubs, and brush on roadside—planting, watering, seeding, sodding, trimming and removal, including chipping of tree limbs and stump removal/grinding.
- Maintain roadways for snow and ice control: remove snow from roadways and shoulders; open and widen roadways of large accumulations of snow; remove snow from rights of way or yards; apply anti-icing and de-icing chemicals under slippery conditions; remove frozen ice and material from culverts; perform night or dawn patrols.
- Prepare and inspect winter equipment—maintain snowplow equipment, cutting edges and sanders; clean equipment post storm.
- Perform preseason snow route inspection and post storm cleanup including machine or hand sweeping of bridges, guardrails, sidewalks, crossovers, medians, ramps, and roadways.
- Maintain documentation on snow and ice data for accurate reporting of inventory and resource management.
Full‑time, year‑round position with seasonal schedules. Summer hours are Monday through Thursday 6:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (4‑10’s). Winter hours are Monday through Friday 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Hours may include overtime or various shifts depending on emergency situations.
QualificationsTransportation Generalist Minimum Qualifications
- Exam Part 1: One (1) year of experience performing activities in snow and ice, soils, road surface maintenance, roadside maintenance, bridge maintenance, signs, or related activities; or education: successful completion of a Heavy Equipment Operation and Maintenance Program (at least 60 semester credits; or 90 quarter credits). Transcripts required for education substitution.
- License: Minimum a valid MN Commercial Driver’s License Class “B” with tanker endorsement and no air brake restriction. Ability to upgrade to a CDL Class A with tanker endorsement and no air brake restriction within 30 days of hire.
- Working knowledge of English sufficient to read, write, speak, and understand oral and written information; communicate with employees and the general public in‑person or via two‑way radio and other electronic devices; maintain routine written logs and simple records.
