This posting is a multi-level posting for multiple openings in the District 1 International Falls Truck Station. If positions are not filled at the Transportation Generalist level, they may be filled at the Transportation Associate level. The Transportation Associate and Transportation Generalist are the first two levels in the Transportation Specialist Series and focus on maintenance to keep roads travel-safe in all seasons.
The Associate is a trainee position with potential promotion to Generalist after one year, with CDL training provided during this period.
Below are examples of typical work for both roles; day-to-day tasks are assigned based on project needs to support safe travel for families and communities in all weather conditions.
Responsibilities- Summer focus:
Road Surface/Roadside Maintenance — maintains and reconstructs roadways, right-of-ways, shoulders; maintains traffic barriers; participates in bituminous road repair, culvert cleaning, and guardrail repair; maintains roadsides; installs catch basins; participates in Adopt-A-Highway programs; performs drainage and shoulder repair. - Summer focus: operation of highway equipment; performs preventive maintenance on equipment; operates tractor mowers and small rollers.
- Summer: traffic control set-ups in high-traffic areas in accordance with field manual, to ensure safety of employees and the traveling public.
- Summer: landscaping duties along roadways including planting, watering, seeding, sodding, pruning and removal; tree limb chipping and stump removal/grinding.
- Winter focus: snow and ice removal — maintains roadways, opens/widens roadways with heavy snow, removes snow from rights-of-way, applies anti-icing and de-icing chemicals, cleans culverts, and handles night/dawn patrols.
- Winter: maintain and inspect winter equipment; post-storm cleanup on bridges, guardrails, sidewalks, crossovers, medians, ramps, and roadways; record snow/ice data for inventory and resource management.
This is a full-time, year-round position with seasonal schedules. Summer hours:
Monday through Thursday, 6:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (4-10s). Winter hours:
Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Hours may include overtime or shifts during emergencies. Hours may include days, nights, weekends, and holidays as required by weather and maintenance conditions. Incumbents must have immediate access to a phone and be able to report to assigned work locations within one hour of being called.
Minimum Qualifications
Exam Part 1: Experience in snow and ice, soils, road surface maintenance, roadside maintenance, bridge maintenance, signs, or related activities (roadway maintenance, driving commercial vehicles, commercial landscaping, operating heavy equipment, or farm experience).
OR
Education: Successful completion of a Heavy Equipment Operation and Maintenance Program (60 semester credits or 90 quarter credits) may substitute for one year of experience. Transcripts may be requested.
AND
- License:
Valid MN Commercial Driver’s License Class B with tanker endorsement and no air brake restriction; ability to upgrade to Class A with tanker endorsement within 30 days of hire. - English proficiency to read, write, speak, and understand information; communicate with employees and the public; maintain logs and records.
Minimum Qualifications

Exam Part 2: Contingent offers will be invited to take a Math and Reading Assessment Test. Passing scores:
Math level 3 or higher;
Reading level 4 or higher. Exemptions may apply if previously tested. Check with district HR for details.
