International Falls, Minnesota. Full-time, day shift (Monday–Friday). Seasonal hours:
Summer hours Monday–Thursday 6:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.;
Winter hours Monday–Friday 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Overtime and varying shifts may occur.
Typical duties vary by season:
Summer
- Maintain and reconstruct roadways, right‑of‑ways, roadway shoulders with gravel, bituminous, and concrete surfaces.
- Maintain traffic barriers; participate in bituminous road repair, culvert cleaning, and guardrail repair.
- Maintain roadsides—install catch basins, place and remove Adopt‑A‑Highway bags, perform drainage and shoulder repair.
- Perform preventive maintenance on highway equipment; operate tractor‑mowers and small rollers.
- Set up traffic control in high‑volume traffic according to Temporary Traffic Zone Layouts field manual to protect employees and the public.
- Perform landscaping duties: plant, water, seed, sod, trim, and remove trees, shrubs, brush; chip tree limbs, remove stumps.
Winter
- Maintain roadways for snow and ice control: remove snow, widen roadways, clear rights‑of‑way, apply anti‑icing and de‑icing chemicals, remove ice from culverts, perform night or dawn patrols.
- Prepare and inspect winter equipment; maintain snowplows, cutting edges, sanders; clean equipment after storms.
- Conduct prere‑season snow‑route inspections and post‑storm cleanup—sweep bridges, guardrails, sidewalks, crossovers, medians, ramps, and roadways.
- Maintain documentation for snow and ice data reporting.
Full‑time, year‑round position with seasonal schedules. Hours may include overtime or varying shifts for emergencies. Summer hours:
Monday–Thursday 6:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.;
Winter hours:
Monday–Friday 7:00 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Incumbents must have immediate access to a phone and be able to report within one hour of a call.
- One (1) year of experience performing activities in snow and ice, soils, road surface maintenance, roadside maintenance, bridge maintenance, signs, or related activities.
- Alternative: successful completion of a Heavy Equipment Operation and Maintenance Program (≥60 semester credits or ≥90 quarter credits).
- Valid MN Commercial Driver’s License Class “B” with tanker endorsement and no air‑brake restriction; must upgrade to CDL Class A within 30 days of hire.
- Working knowledge of English sufficient to read, write, speak, and understand oral and written information; communicate with employees and the general public; maintain logs and simple records.
- Commercial Driver’s Permit with no air‑brake restrictions; tanker endorsement by hire date.
- Training to obtain Class A CDL within 3 months of hire.
- Working knowledge of English as above.
Candidates offered a contingent job will be invited to take a computerized Math and Reading Assessment Test. Required passing scores:
Math level 3 or higher;
Reading level 4 or higher. Acceptance contingent on passing the test. Candidates who have previously passed may be exempt.
- Previous MnDOT experience as Laborer, Transportation Associate, or Transportation Generalist.
Must work nights and be exposed to weather elements (hot & cold). Drive on on/off‑road conditions, walk on uneven slopes, rotate through various body positions (standing, twisting, bending, etc.). Occasionally operate machinery. May need to move 50–70 lb.
