Material Handler

The material handler supports safe and efficient warehouse operations by moving materials and finished products throughout the facility, with a focus on shipping and receiving activities. This role uses sit-down forklifts, pallet jacks, and order picking processes to keep production areas stocked, organize incoming materials, and prepare outbound shipments. The position currently relies on paper pick sheets and will transition to an RF scanner system, so the material handler must be comfortable working with both methods.

Responsibilities

  • Move materials and finished products throughout the warehouse and shipping and receiving areas using sit-down forklifts and pallet jacks.
  • Keep production and assembly areas fully stocked with the correct materials to support continuous machine and assembly operations.
  • Use paper pick sheets to locate, pick, and stage smaller parts and materials, ensuring accuracy and completeness of each order.
  • Support the transition from paper pick sheets to an RF scanner system by learning and using new scanning technology as it is implemented.
  • Create Bills of Lading (BOLs) for outgoing shipments and contact carriers to schedule LTL and full truckload pickups.
  • If assigned to the receiving area, unload truckloads of material, tag materials accurately, and organize them in the correct locations in the receiving area.
  • Coordinate with supervisors to identify required materials for specific jobs, locate those materials in the warehouse, and deliver them to the appropriate machines.
  • If assigned near the assembly department, review pick sheets to determine required materials, use a forklift to retrieve the correct pallets, pick the needed items, build pallets, and deliver them to the assembly area.
  • Assist the shipping department by staging outbound orders, loading trucks, and ensuring shipments are properly labeled and documented.
  • Perform cycle counts during downtime to help maintain accurate inventory records and identify discrepancies.
  • Operate forklifts (stand-up or sit-down), reach trucks, and pallet jacks safely and in accordance with company and safety procedures.
  • Perform general labor tasks related to material handling, shipping, and receiving as needed to support overall warehouse operations.

Essential Skills

  • Proven material handling experience in a warehouse, shipping, or receiving environment.
  • Hands-on picking experience using pick sheets to locate and pull materials and parts.
  • Forklift experience, including stand-up or sit-down forklifts, with the ability to operate safely and efficiently.
  • Experience with order picking and building pallets for production or shipping.
  • Proficiency using computers to support tasks such as basic data entry, inventory lookups, or shipping documentation.
  • Shipping and receiving experience, including loading and unloading trucks and handling shipping documentation such as Bills of Lading.
  • Ability to operate pallet jacks and, where applicable, reach trucks.
  • Comfort working with paper-based processes and adapting to RF scanner technology as it is introduced.
  • Attention to detail and accuracy when tagging, organizing, and picking materials.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience creating shipping Bills of Lading (BOLs) and coordinating with carriers for LTL and truckload shipments.
  • Previous experience using RF scanners or similar warehouse technology.
  • Experience in inventory control, including performing cycle counts and resolving discrepancies.
  • General labor experience in a manufacturing or warehouse setting.
  • Ability to communicate clearly with supervisors and team members to coordinate material needs and priorities.
