- Provide consultation and direct instruction for identified deaf and hard of hearing students birth through age 21+ within their educational setting(s).
- Serve as the teacher of the deaf/hard of hearing in the assessment and identification of children with potential hearing loss.
- Serve as a resource and liaison to parents and educators working with outside agencies.
- Review and interpret available medical/audiological information pertaining to the student's hearing results.
- Demonstrate knowledge and skills in the areas of language development and language refinement needed by hearing impaired children.
- Demonstrate knowledge and ability to implement specialized areas: auditory training, speech and speech reading, monitoring amplification use and maintenance of hearing aids, and use of interpreter.
- Determine, as part of a team, the need for, and the selection, acquisition, and use of hearing technologies and assistive technologies to meet the needs of children and youth with hearing loss.
- Participate in IEP/IFSP/IIIP development and program planning for students on caseload, and evaluate current services and plan for future needs.
- Communicate with parents outside the normal classroom, including attending team conferences with parents.
- Establish and maintain standards of pupil behavior to achieve an effective learning atmosphere.
- Maintain and improve professional skills by attending meetings, coursework, workshops, and seminars.
- Participate in training on third‑party reimbursement and perform related tasks.
- Work collaboratively with colleagues and supervisors, and with home‑based, center‑based, and inclusion settings.
- Participate in a professional learning community on a regular basis.
- Teachers of the Deaf/Hard of Hearing (DHH) must provide evidence of proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL); the rating from the Sign Language Proficiency Interview (SLPI) must be Intermediate Plus or higher to receive the DHH license. If the SLPI rating is Survival to Intermediate, the teacher is eligible for an Oral/Aural Deaf Education license. Candidates needing to take the SLPI should contact the Minnesota State Academy for the Deaf (MSAD).
- Collaborate in a fast‑paced environment interacting with students, staff, administrators, parents, and the community with multiple requests and concerns.
- Support and communicate with other administrators and staff.
- Respond in emergency situations.
- Know, interpret, and follow school District policies.
- May plan and coordinate the work of paraprofessionals and volunteers in the classroom and on field trips.
- May provide input to the goal‑setting process for paraprofessionals.
- Experience working with children and families with identified special education needs and hearing loss.
- Demonstrated ability to apply appropriate skills in performing daily routines.
- Demonstrated ability to operate a computer, software, and necessary technology.
- Develop effective and positive working relationships with students, staff, administrators, parents, and the community.
- Maintain professional composure while dealing with a variety of personalities and situations.
- Show initiative and function as a self‑starter.
- Evidence of strong written and oral communication skills, and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisors, and the general public.
