Apex Engineering Group has an opening for a Lead Engineer in our Water Group. Primary responsibilities include managing a team of engineers, technicians, and support staff on water and/or wastewater projects from the planning phase through design and construction. The Lead Engineer will independently manage projects, collaborate on design and development of project plans and specifications, mentor team members, and report to a senior engineer or principal.
Additional duties include marketing the firm and business development activities.
- Provide professional engineering services for clients by conducting studies, planning, design, specifications, plans, reports, construction administration, observation, and project management.
- Communicate frequently and effectively with clients, supervisors, and project team members by providing updates and progress during all phases of projects.
- Attend company meetings, project meetings, and client meetings as deemed necessary.
- Lead the preparation of proposals and participate in interviews to secure work for the firm. Business development responsibilities will increase with experience and mentorship by senior staff.
- Demonstrate initiative, think independently, and make rational judgment calls.
- Provide direction and work with engineering technicians and other team members on the development of project plans and specifications.
- Work and coordinate with other engineering teams on complex multi‑discipline projects.
- Understand and follow the company employee handbook and mandated safety policies.
- Perform responsibilities in a conscientious, legal, and ethical manner with strong attention to detail.
- Work independently and in a team environment.
- Participate in professional organizations and community leadership programs as deemed appropriate.
- Travel and out‑of‑town stays may be required; overtime may be required especially during the construction season.
- Other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
- Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil or Environmental Engineering is required;
Master’s Degree is a plus. - Professional Engineer’s license preferred or ability to be licensed within 6‑12 months required.
- Seven or more years of experience as a Civil or Environmental Engineer in the water and/or wastewater field.
- Experience with water supply, distribution and treatment, wastewater collection, conveyance and treatment is necessary.
- Experience preparing civil design drawings, specifications, and cost estimates related to water/sewer utilities, pump stations, and treatment facilities is preferred.
- Experience working with local and state agencies is a plus.
- Strong project management skills and experience are essential.
- Construction management experience is required.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills are prerequisites.
- Detail‑oriented, self‑motivated, with strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
- Flexible working style and willingness to adjust personal schedules to meet deadlines and client needs.
- Proficient using Microsoft Windows/Office products (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
- Hydraulic and/or process modeling is a plus.
- Working knowledge of AutoCAD, Civil 3D or other CADD‑based civil design software is a plus.
- A valid driver’s license is required or the ability to obtain one.
- Ability to operate a computer under normal ergonomic office conditions.
- Required to work outdoors during the construction season.
- May require prolonged periods of standing and walking to perform construction observation or surveying.
- Required to lift objects or containers weighing 50 lbs.
- Must work scheduled and required hours.

Base Salary Pay Range: $95k - $130k (Actual base pay is dependent on several factors, including experience, education, licensure, job location, and internal equity.)
