General Job Description

This position of WH BL/SL Operator is responsible for all operating functions as listed below. Operation of WH SL/BL must be understood in total with the focus of utilizing the equipment to meet all the quality and productivity goals as outlined in our quality system. All work instructions must be followed as outlined.

Essential Job Functions
  • Primary activities include learning, understanding, and following the detailed work instructions. Training normally lasts approximately 1500 hours, monitored by the Process Engineer/Supervisor.
  • Check the coil to be run on the unit to ensure it matches the schedule. Confirm pay‑off instructions and any special instructions with the Inspector via AS 400 system.
  • Set up the slitter head and place the coil into the unit.
  • Feed the coil through the slitter head, center the side scrap, keep edge burrs within tolerance, and thread the strip into the coiler reel following all work instructions.
  • Insert cardboard cores, cardboard, skids, foam, and interleaving paper as per work instruction and customer requirements.
  • Operate the line at proper speeds as directed by work instructions and the inspector.
  • Other miscellaneous items include:
    • Start and remove interleaving paper as per work instructions.
    • Remove scrap or secondary pup coils directed by inspection.
    • Create arbor head setups per ASKO/Cowles software programs.
    • Enter all machine sheets as per work instructions.
    • Prepare used slitter knives into boxes for grinding.
    • Prepare all families of arbor rubbers for grinding.
    • Change s as specified.
    • Cut skids, cores, and paper as needed for coil widths and gauges.
    • Follow all prescribed safety rules.
    • Start, remove, and band all scrap balls as per work instructions.
    • Perform all housekeeping/maintenance functions as assigned.
    • Band all finished coils and skids per work instructions.
    • Perform all other jobs as assigned.
    • Assist in loading and unloading coils as necessary.
  • Participate in continuous improvement programs.

  • Minimum Education, Skills, and Experience
    • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to multitask.
    • Basic computer skills and ability to use inspection tools.
    • Minimum of a high school degree or equivalent.
    • Previous quality inspection experience preferred.
    Physical Abilities Required
    • Mobility in plant.
    • Ability to sit, stand, walk, and perform technical tasks with hands.
    • Occasional lifting or moving up to 50 pounds.
    • Visual ability with or without correction.
    • Communication abilities.
    Health and Safety
  • Work in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and regulations.
  • Follow company safety rules.
  • Report absence of or defects in protective equipment or clothing to the supervisor or manager immediately.
  • Use or wear required protective equipment:
    • Safety shoes.
    • Safety glasses.
    • Hearing protection.
    • Hard hat.
    • Respirators (clean shaven required to comply with company policies and OSHA regulations).
    • Fire retardant clothing.
    • Acid PPE.
  • Report contraventions of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and regulations or company policy to the safety coordinator, group lead, or supervisor.
  • Follow lock‑out tag‑out guidelines for designated machines.
  • Follow environmental policies and regulations.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work area.
  • Work Environment
