Position Summary
The RN, Surgical Nursing provides comprehensive nursing care to patients recovering from surgical procedures, supporting safe healing and timely progression through the postoperative phase of care. This role performs frequent assessments, monitors for potential complications, manages pain and symptom control, and delivers evidence-based nursing interventions tailored to each patient’s surgical needs. Working collaboratively with surgeons, anesthesia providers, therapy disciplines, and care management teams, the RN helps coordinate individualized care plans and supports smooth transitions from surgery to discharge.
As part of a supportive, team-oriented surgical care environment, this position promotes patient understanding of postoperative expectations and safe recovery at home through clear education and patient-centered communication.
- Perform detailed postoperative assessments, monitor vital signs and surgical sites, and promptly respond to changes in patient condition.
- Administer medications, wound care, and therapeutic interventions in accordance with clinical standards and evaluate patient responses.
- Coordinate care with surgeons, anesthesia teams, therapy providers, and case management to support effective recovery and discharge planning.
- Maintain accurate documentation of assessments, interventions, medication administration, and patient education within the electronic health record.
- Educate patients and families on postoperative care needs, incision care, mobility expectations, pain management strategies, and safety precautions.
- Participate in quality and safety initiatives to enhance surgical patient outcomes and support process improvement within the surgical nursing unit.
